Betty Lou Lowery Graves was born on August 24, 1932, in the same home where she spent her life with her husband of 58 years, Marvin Heath Graves, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Jack Miller Lowery, Sr. and Sallie Duvall Brooking Lowery Gibson; her brother, Jack Miller Lowery, Jr.; and her grandson, Marvin Heath Graves III ("Trey"). She is survived by her sons: Richard Von Wittkamp (Soya) of Seattle, WA; Marvin Heath Graves, Jr. (Terri); and Henry Brooking Graves (Irene), both of
Georgetown, KY. Her grandchildren include: Katherine Lowery Graves Wondergem (Mike), Sr. Agnes Mary Graves, Zach Henry Brooking Graves, Zach Von Wittkamp, Brittany Graves Underwood (Glenn) and Sallie Graves Pollock (Brandon). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Asa, Hadley, Stella, Kellen, Emma, Austin, Ivy, and Holly.
Betty Lou retired from Kentucky Finance Company after 29 years of service. A lifelong member of First Christian Church in Georgetown, she joined the church and choir at age 11 and remained active until recent years. She graduated from Garth High School and went on to attend Georgetown College and Fugazzi Business School. A dedicated genealogist and historian, Betty Lou was an active member of numerous heritage and lineage societies, including: First Families of Kentucky, Big Spring Chapter D.A.R., Magna Carta Dames, Jamestown Society, Society of Mareen Duvall, Huguenot Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Colonial Dames of America, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Colonists, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, Founders and Patriots, Order of the Garter, Daughters of Indian Wars, Brooking Society, Daughters of 1812, Scott County Historical Society, and Scott County Genealogical Society.
In her nearly 93 years, Betty Lou created a legacy of love and fond memories with her family and many friends. Affectionately known as "Nanna," she was cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, clever sense of humor, and unwavering kindness. She found joy in simple pleasures: solving daily crossword puzzles, mowing the lawn at Weedy Meadows Farm, cheering on University of Kentucky basketball and football, tending her flower gardens, sipping coffee from her front porch rocking chair, playing the piano, and listening to classical and jazz music. Each Christmas, she lovingly made and shared her famous caramels and bourbon balls-a sweet tradition treasured by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 am - 11:00 am with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am on Tuesday June 3, 2025, at First Christian Church, 112 E. College Street,
Georgetown, Kentucky 40324. The burial will be at Masonic Cemetery in Stamping Ground, KY.
