Bettye Rittenberry Coggin, a beloved figure and cherished matriarch of her family, passed away on October 28, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on January 22, 1942, in Columbia, TN, Bettye's life was marked by her unwavering love for her family and her dedication to her career.
For over 20 years, Bettye served as the Kitchen Manager for Metro Public Schools, where she became known for her nurturing spirit and commitment to providing nourishing meals for countless children. Her service extended beyond the school kitchen; she spent 13 years driving 18-wheelers alongside her husband, Mr. Harold Coggin, showcasing her adventurous side and strong work ethic.
Bettye's personality was a unique blend of loving, caring, and strong-willed. She was supportive to those around her and maintained a no-nonsense approach to life, earning the respect and admiration of family and friends alike. Her proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly her family, which she cherished above all else.
In her free time, Bettye found joy in baking and often filled her home with the delightful aromas of her culinary creations. She had a passion for listening to audio books from the library, a pastime that broadened her horizons and enriched her mind. A true animal lover, she formed special bonds with dogs and cats alike, treating them as integral members of her family. Additionally, Bettye had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, with a particular fondness for the beautiful Smokey Mountains, where she enjoyed spending time in nature.
Bettye is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Mr. Harold Coggin; her sons, Jeff and Timothy(Barry); and her brother, Thomas Rittenberry.
Bettye is predeceased by her parents, Horace and Frances Rittenberry, and two brothers, Wayne and Larry Rittenberry.
Her warmth, kindness, and indomitable spirit will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Bettye Rittenberry Coggin leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, forever etched in the hearts of her family and friends.
