With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Beverly Weiss Shaffner on September 17, 2025. Born on October 16, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Beverly spent her formative years in Wilton Manors before her family made the transition to Fort Lauderdale at the age of six.
Beverly's journey began at Stranahan High School, where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Ed, in 1959. Together, they planted roots in Plantation, Florida, and nurtured a loving family with their two remarkable children, Tim and Debbie.
A woman of many passions, Beverly rediscovered her love for skating during the opening night of the Sunrise Ice Skating Center in 1979. This rekindled passion flourished as she became an enthusiastic competitor in both country dance and ice-skating competitions, achieving notable victories, including her first ice skating win in 1982 and a dance competition victory in 1997.
Her journey extended beyond competition as she shared her talent and love of ice skating with countless young skaters at the Scott Rakow Youth Center and Pines Ice Arena, where she served as an instructor from 1993 to 2017. Beverly’s dedication to the sport also saw her become a USFSA judge, lending her expertise to numerous competitions while serving as the Director at the Sunrise Ice Skating Center until 2009.
Beverly's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be cherished for her honesty, kindness, and her remarkable ability to provide support and guidance to those around her.
She is survived by her devoted husband Edward Shaffner; loving son Timothy Shaffner, and his fiancée Michele Martinez; beloved daughter Debra Shaffner Ogle, along with her partner Michael Pakula; cherished grandchildren Angelina and Antonietta Pakula; treasured brother Lawrence Weiss; sister-in-law Margaret Weiss; nephew Mark Weiss and his wife Benita; and grandnephew Jacob Weiss.
Beverly is preceded in death by her father Edward L. Weiss, mother Mary Jane Weiss, brother Theodore Weiss, and brother-in-law Donald Shaffner.
A memorial service to honor Beverly’s life will take place on October 3rd, 2025, at 11:30 AM EST at T.M. Ralph, 7001 NW 4th Street, Plantation, FL 33317. The family will receive guest starting 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, a reflection of Beverly's heart for helping others.
Beverly's spirit will forever shine brightly in our memories, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
