William Joseph "Bill" Coons was born November 5, 1940 in Webster Groves, MO to Wesley and Delores (nee' Helfrich) Coons. He passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025 in Washington, MO at the age of 84 years.
Bill grew up in Villa Ridge, MO and graduated from Washington High School in 1960. He was united in marriage to Janet South on September 28, 1963 in Otterville, MO. The couple made their home in Washington, MO and their marriage was blessed with two children.
Bill enjoyed a successful career as a pressman for many years. He began working for The Missourian Publishing Company and worked for a few years for Mel Bay Publishing. After many years of dedicated service, Bill retired from The Missourian in 1995. In retirement, Bill worked part-time as a groundskeeper at Elmwood Golf Course.
Throughout his life, Bill held a love for sports. In earlier years, he played basketball in high school and played baseball for the American Legion teams and with the Buds. Later in life, he enjoyed watching baseball and spending time playing golf. Bill loved his family dearly and cherished the memories he made with each member of his family throughout the course of his life. He was a devoted husband, loving father, beloved grandfather, dear brother, and friend to many.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Delores Coons; his parents-in-law, Carl and Ruby (nee' Vahrenberg) Harshaw; six siblings: Delores Ann, Dorothy, Ruth, James, and Dennis; and his brother-in-law, David Hillermann.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janet Coons (nee' South) of Washington; two children: Jenny Keesey of Vancouver, WA and William Coons Jr. and spouse Moses Ruiz of Palm Springs, CA; two grandchildren: Kate Williams of Vancouver, WA and Joseph Williams of Kansas City, MO; five great-grandchildren: Ethan Morris, Gabriella Williams, Liara Williams, James Williams, and Lucas Williams; two brothers: Jack Coons and George Coons and wife Lana; one sister: Jeannie Canaan; four sisters-in-law: Darlene Coons, Elizabeth Coons, Joan Taylor and husband Dennis, and Laurie Hillermann; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Memorial visitation for 84-year-old Bill Coons will be held from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at Oltmann Funeral Home in Washington, MO.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
