HANNAWA FALLS – Gerald M. Coons, 94, passed away early Monday morning, October 6, 2025 at United Helpers Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Canton.
Born in Cortland on September 28, 1931, he attended schools in Cortland and graduated from Rome Free Academy before attending Clarkson University. On August 26, 1952, he entered the US Army, serving his country until his honorable discharge on August 18, 1954. He married Irene McAllister and was blessed with two sons prior to her death in 1984. In 1988, he married Claudette Carriere and enjoyed 38 years of marriage.
Gerald worked for Niagara Mohawk for many years, retiring as an electric planner. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and former member of the Masonic Lodge. Gerald was a very talented musician, who played in many local bands including being a member of the Norwood Brass Firemen. He also enjoyed making furniture.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Claudette; his sons, Martin (Mary Lou) Coons and Eric (Darlene) Coons; his stepchildren, Jon (Trish) Ciarlo and Melanie Ciarlo (Steve Tardiff); his grandchildren, William and David; his step grandchildren, Matthew, Jacob, Isiac, and Ashleigh; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where services will be held privately with burial in Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
