Billie "BJ" Joe Spatcher Sr., of Folkston, GA, was born on July 25, 1941 to the late Sam Spatcher and Leola Spatcher (Nee) Bailey. BJ, departed this life on March 6, 2024 at the age of 82. He was one of 12 and had a twin sister Lily Spatcher who was a published author. Billy married his wife the late Pastor Bertha Spatcher on July 11, 1964, in the city of Newark.
BJ, as he was affectionately known, had a fulfilling career working for the Newark Housing Authority for over 40 years, and was a tenured employed with Newark Green Taxicab. He was a people person, so these jobs fit his personality, as he always had a passion for nurturing, and helping others. He was dedicated to his work and made valuable contributions to both organizations. In 1966, BJ and was overjoyed to welcomed his only child, a son, little BJ into world.
BJ understood that religion was important, and was a member of The Upper Room House of Worship of Newark, NJ, where he found solace and community. During his down time BJ had a passion for singing, dancing, and traveling, but above all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing the pick-it, billiards, and had a natural love for the racetrack (betting that is). He was a handy man who could fix anything when he was in the mood. He enjoyed listening to his oldie but goodies records collection and to today's music he just knew he was young. BJ loved them sorry Jets, and sometimes supported his son and daughter-in-love teams the Giants and the Great Dallas Cowboys. At the age of 82, he knew everybody's phone number from memory, his mind was sharp, and numbers were his thing.
As dad begin to slow down, he found a new love and that was his fur baby Cobra. Dad loved his cat, and she loved him. No matter how busy he was, BJ loved without conditions, family and friends meant the world to him. Therefore, giving you the shirt off his back went without saying. If BJ could give everyone the world, he would have.
BJ is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, twin sister Lillie, brothers Daniel, Wilbur, Elvis, and Leroy. He leaves to mourn his only son, Billy Spatcher Jr. (Dr. J. Spatcher), Cleveland Spicer, Grandchildren, Iyana, Deven, Takwan, and Jibril, fur grandbabies Lucky and Dior. His sisters Florence Neely, Viola Spatcher-Stephens (John), Laverne Davis. In laws Dorothy Mitchell, Barbara Smith (William), Patricia Green (Fred), and Jannie Hunter, brother in laws Bernard Canty, Reynold Mitchell (Betty), Samuel Mitchell. His special friends and family. God Daughter Jada (her babies), Tiwanna Hubbard.
Special thanks for the love and dedication to those unnamed, the family thank you for all you gave without looking for anything in return, true family. To his three-amigos Sherry, Zack, and Junior who became his dedicated crew, he depended on you and you never let him down, the family want to say thank you. Without your help, love, and dedication, we don't know what we would have done.
BJ was known for his knowledge, singing, sarcasm, providing transportation, and words of wisdom. Known for being SUCCA FREE. Dad will tell you he had no gray hair because he did not stress about nothing. He was the Father to everyone he encountered in Newark. Everybody was family, BJ called everyone, his nephew, niece, son, daughter and so on. He will be missed. Farewell to our very own Newark legend.
