Billy Duncan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bowser Family Funeral Home - Mena on Jan. 11, 2026.
Billy Joe Duncan, a dedicated military retiree, loving husband, father, grandfather, and cherished family man, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 85. His life was marked by his unwavering service to his country, deep love for his family, and a joy for the simple pleasures of life.

Billy's story began on November 17, 1940, in a family that instilled in him the values of duty, honor, and commitment. A proud member of the United States Army, he enlisted in 1960 after joining the Air Force Reserve in 1958. His 20-year military career saw him earn numerous accolades, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal, among others. He served two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea, with distinction and valor, earning recognition not only for his bravery but also for his exceptional skills. Billy was the military National Champion in Skeet Sharp Shooter competition, a testament to his dedication and precision.

Billy retired from active duty in 1980, but his service to his country continued in civil service with the U.S. Army until 1995. After retiring, he and his beloved wife Patricia moved to Smithville, OK, where they would spend many years together. Billy and Patricia shared a remarkable 67 years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and a deep bond that was evident to all who knew them.

Beyond his military accomplishments, Billy was a devoted family man. He was a loving father to his five children, Steve (Wife Sharon), Clay, Pattie Jo (Husband Randy), Donnie (Wife Letty), and Jimmy (Wife Sheena), and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to many. He was a constant presence in the lives of his 12 grandchildren-Mira, Christopher, Christin, Jimmy (Wife Sheena), Trent (Wife Lauren), Amy (Bryan), Tracey (Shane), Rachel (Wayne), Lucas (Allyson), Alyssa, Marc and Miguel-and his 16 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Duncan, Alia, Bailey, Andrei, Micah, Audrey, Emma, Four, Jalyn, Olivia, Katherine, Keaton, Hudson, Macy, and Walter who brought him immense joy.

Billy's passions went beyond his military career. He was an outdoorsman at heart and enjoyed bowling with his family and friends.

Billy is preceded in death by his parents, Lula Mae and Louis Duncan, his brothers Gene, Bobby, and Ed, his sister Celia, and his grandson Miguel. He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia, his brother Tex, his 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Billy's legacy of love, service, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will continue to inspire future generations to honor their country, cherish their families, and live life to the fullest.

A funeral service will be held in his honor, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas on 2-9-2026 at 11 am, followed by a Celebration of Life.

Rest in peace, Billy Joe Duncan. You served your country with honor, loved your family with all your heart, and lived a life that made the world a better place.
