Robert C. Harris, Sr. a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, in Royal Oak, MI, at the age of 87. Born on June 22, 1937, in Ann Arbor, MI, Robert's life was marked by his love for his family, his passion for music, and his dedication to his career.
Robert's journey began as the beloved son of Henry and Mary, and he grew up alongside his sister, Leeann Selbee, and his late siblings. He was a proud graduate of Central Michigan University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree, setting the stage for a successful professional life. Robert dedicated over two decades of service to Dow Chemical in Midland, MI, as a supervisor, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. He continued to share his talents with the world after retirement, ultimately concluding his career as a district sales manager for Turbo Start Batteries in the Michigan area.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Shirley, and a loving father to his children, Robert II (Natalie), Michael (Anne), Scott, Debora Hurry, and Becky. His love extended to his stepchildren, Pamela, Debbie, Billy Jo, Lorri Doyle, Joyce (Bill) Parker, Steven (Sandy Boyd) Johnstone, Kathy Watson, and Patricia (Stewart) Kowalski, and he fondly remembered the late Joseph Johnstone. The legacy of Robert's kind spirit, zest for life, and humor will live on through his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
An avid musician, Robert's played the drums and the standing bass with skill and passion, most recently performing with The Rambler's. His love for jazz was infectious, and his talent undeniable. Beyond music, Robert's interests were diverse and impressive. He was a bodybuilder in his youth, a drag racer for Mopar, and a craftsman who enjoyed building engines, furniture, and undertaking home improvements. His adventurous spirit led him to travel and he found joy in the simple pleasure of walking.
Those who knew Robert would describe him as thoughtful, creative, and funny. His sense of humor brought laughter to any room, and his creative problem-solving brightened the lives of those around him. As Mark Twain once said, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started." Robert embodied this spirit, always eager to embark on new projects and adventures.
Robert's impact on the world was significant and lasting. He approached life with a rare combination of determination and levity, leaving a trail of memories and milestones in his wake. As we remember Robert, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and music.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary, his three brothers, one sister, and his stepson, Joseph Johnstone. He is survived by his loving family, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
In his passing, Robert leaves behind a melody of memories that will continue to play in the hearts of all who loved him. His life was a beautiful composition of the things he cherished, and his memory will be treasured forever. We bid farewell to Robert C. Harris, a man of many talents and immeasurable heart, who made the world a brighter place with his presence. He will be deeply missed.
