Robert William Schwab, affectionately known as Bob to his friends and family, passed away on January 9, 2024, at the age of 94 in Marble Falls, Texas. Bob was born on June 2, 1929, in Davenport, Iowa where he grew up. Bob joined the Army in 1952 and soon married his wife Bea in 1953, settling in Iowa City, Iowa in 1959. They lived there until they retired to Kingsland, Texas in 1989, where they quickly became true Texans.
Bob's life was marked by his enduring commitment to his family and his faith. A loving husband of Sixty-two years to his late wife Beatrice, a caring father to his son Paul, and a beloved grandfather to Neil and his wife Shannon, Andrew and his wife Alexandra, and Elizabeth and her husband Michael. His legacy continues to bloom through his four great-granddaughters.
Bob was a devoted Catholic, attending daily mass at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Kingsland, TX. He was active within his parish and a donor to multiple catholic charities. He prayed often and was always a very spiritual man.
Bob's artistic journey began at the Chicago Academy of Art, where he honed the skills that would define his professional life. He first worked as an Art Director for the Fort Howard Paper Co. in Green Bay, WI. In 1959, he joined the family business in Iowa City, IA, Schwab Advertising Systems, working as a commercial artist alongside his father and four brothers. His work, marked by creativity, brought life to diverse canvases and campaigns.
A veteran of the Army who served during the Korean War, stationed as an Anti-Aircraft Gunner in Alameda, California. He was a member of a special unit that witnessed atomic bomb testing in the Nevada desert in 1953. Bob served his country with the same dedication that he applied to every aspect of his life.
Bob's interests were as varied as his talents. A man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, he was an avid gardener and truly enjoyed creating a beautiful landscape and productive garden. Behind the lens of a camera, he captured moments of wonder and serenity. A fisherman, he appreciated the quiet patience of the sport, and as a golfer, he enjoyed both the challenge of the game and the companionship of his fellow players. Evenings spent playing cards were filled with laughter and friendly competition.
Those who knew Bob would describe him as funny, creative, and kind. He shared his wit, bringing smiles and laughter to all who had the pleasure of his company.
His grandchildren would often ask "What is your advice for life?", to which he would reply, "You'll never be disappointed if you don't have any expectations." Bob Schwab lived with all his heart, seeking beauty, striving for joy, and loving deeply.
Bob's memory will be treasured and kept alive in the stories told, the art created, and the lives he touched. He may have left this earth, but his spirit remains with those who had the honor of knowing him.
