Robert Long "Bobby" Stewart, Jr., 71, died Friday, February 9, 2024, after a brief illness, with his loving family at his side.
He was born July 17, 1952, in Carrollton, Georgia, son of the late Robert Long "Bob" Stewart, Sr. and Jean Penfield Stewart.
Whether you called him Bobby or "Robert L", "Bobo" or simply "L", everybody called him friend. Bobby lit up every room he entered. He was generous, charismatic, loving, and fun, living life to the fullest. His engaging personality and infectious grin brought a smile to everyone around him. He loved Carrollton, the South and all its traditions. He was a graduate of Carrollton High School Class of 1970 and the University of Georgia, a lifelong Bulldog fan, as well as a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Most especially, he took great joy in his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
Bobby leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Gloria Smith Stewart, their daughter, Amanda Addison Stewart, and her boyfriend Christopher "Chris" Brenton Wright. Bobby is also survived by siblings, James "Jimmy" Penfield Stewart and his wife Cathy and Jane Stewart Reynolds and her husband Ryan, along with many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends that were like family.
Bobby loved his Centurion Golf League buddies like brothers. He was a three-time winner, and reigning champion, of the Centurion Cup. He enjoyed hiking in the mountains of North Carolina where he made many close friends at Mountaintop Golf Club. He had an extensive knowledge of local Carroll County history, was a Civil War buff, and member of the Carroll County Irregulars. He and Gloria traveled extensively, making new friends along the way, and instilled a love of travel in Amanda.
He worked for more than 35 years in the commercial insurance business with the Marsh McLennan Agency, formerly J. Smith Lanier & Company, where he was Vice President and Managing Director.
As a lifelong member of Carrollton Presbyterian Church, he served as a Session Member. An icon in the community that he loved, Bobby dedicated his time and energy to many civic groups including Jaycees, Lions Club, Sertoma and, a current Rotary Club Member. He was instrumental in starting the KA chapter at the University of West Georgia. Past leadership positions include President of the Board of Directors of Sunset Hills Country Club, serving on the local Board of Directors of Regions Bank and First Georgia Banking Company, as well as 14 years as a member of the Tanner Medical Foundation Board of Trustees. He was a current member of the Community Foundation of West Georgia Board of Directors.
An avid outdoorsman, Bobby was passionate about walking with his dogs, and most recently, riding the tractor on his land. He had a keen eye for finding arrowheads. He was excellent at reading the weather and nobody enjoyed a good snowstorm more than Bobby. From September to March, his fireplace never went out, and he hosted many big bonfires in his backyard. He relished, and had an extensive knowledge of, all things in nature snakes, turtles, birds, trees, and fish.
Friends and family will gather to honor Bobby's life on Thursday, February 15th at 3:00pm at Carrollton Presbyterian Church, 124 Maple Street, Carrollton, with services provided by Rev. Jan Tolbert and Rev. Kate Colussy-Estes. Afterwards, a celebration of Bobby's life will be held at Sunset Hills Country Club, 1 Club Drive, Carrollton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to The Heart Fund at Tanner Medical Foundation: P.O. Box 695 Carrollton, GA 30112 or to the charity of your choice.
