Bonnie Boothroyd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Jan. 8, 2026.
Bonnie Ruth (Fillman) Boothroyd, aka "Grandma Bon Bon", 77 years old, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2026 after nearly a year of battling cancer.

Bonnie was born in Des Moines on December 18, 1948 to Ralph and Floy (Stottlemeyer) Fillman. She grew up on the southside of Des Moines, the youngest of six siblings. She graduated from Lincoln High School and worked her way through nursing school, which led to a nursing career spanning four decades at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Bonnie enjoyed art and was quite talented with paint, pencil and pastels. She had a green thumb and loved to nurture all kinds of plants and flowers and she always had a wonderful vegetable garden as well as grapevines and fruit trees. Flowers were her favorite and they were all over her yard in many colorful varieties.

Bonnie enjoyed many weekends at her lake properties where we would often retreat for summer fun and camping. She loved to travel with her sisters and their trips took them to Scotland, Ireland, Colorado and two ship cruises together. She was very active and exercised by walking or jogging daily. She was also very proud of her work at her neighborhood community garden.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Fillman; her mother, Floy Fillman Cross, her brothers, Harold Fillman, Jim Stottlemeyer and Jerry Fillman; a sister, Grace Fillman Byrd and an infant son, Donald Eugene Boothroyd.

Bonnie is survived by her sister, Carol (Duane) Fulton; two sons, Daniel (Tara) Boothroyd and Ronald (Lori) Boothroyd; grandchildren, Jacob (Katie), Jason, Bryan (Bettye), Travis (Lauren), Jeremy, Skyler (Journey) and Evelyn, her only granddaughter; eight great grandchildren, Addy, Jonah, Caroline, Jacie, Caylee, Edward, Rowan, Jonathan and a ninth grandchild due in June. She is also survived by her beloved Baby Minnie (cat).

Bonnie is loved and will be remembered fondly by many family, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 16, 2026 at Iles Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m, Friday (prior to the service). Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.

So sorry of your loss. Bonnie and I had study hall together in 12th grade and we spent our time playing Connect the Dots... she always had more squares than I did by the time study hall was over. The last time I saw Bonnie was in 1984 at Mercy Hospital where she was a nurse....my mom's nurse in fact. We talked for a little bit catching up until she had to go back to work.
