Brenda Mitchiner Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 15, 2023.
This is the story of Brenda (Sherritt) Mitchiner. Brenda was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was someone that we cherished and she will be missed. Brenda Mitchiner, 78, passed away on March 13, 2023, at home surrounded by her family. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia and she grew up in Miami with her parents and two brothers. She graduated from Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in 1962 with academic honors. She went to Gallaudet University and graduated with a B.S. in Library
Science in 1966 and then again with her M.A. in Linguistics in 1985. She was a lifelong educator who loved working with people. At Gallaudet, Brenda taught American Sign Language (ASL), and English. Brenda was also an ASL assessment rater for American Sign Language, and before she retired she was the interim Director for the Center for American Sign Language Literacy at Gallaudet University.
Brenda met John Mitchiner at Gallaudet, and after graduating, he became her husband. They were life-long partners for 55 years who enjoyed doing a variety of things in life. They credit their faith in God for keeping their marriage strong. Brenda enjoyed diving into various hobbies which included cross-stitching, crocheting, and making different craft items. She also enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, John. They were blessed with 3 children who produced 4 grandchildren. As a grandmother, she was affectionately known as Nana. She did not let age stop her and she loved staying young by participating with her grandchildren in their activities like climbing up the waterslide and going down with them. She did not mind getting her hair wet. As a mother, she is remembered as someone who had a sense of humor and taught us how to stand up for ourselves. She taught us to enjoy traveling and enjoying life.
Brenda Mitchiner is survived by her husband, John Mitchiner; her children, Camille Albrecht (Dirk), Jon Mitchiner (Julie); her grandchildren, William Albrecht, Gabrielle Albrecht, Chloe Mitchiner, and Kira Mitchiner.
She is predeceased by her parents; Charles and Colleen Sherritt, brothers; Ron Sherritt, Dean Sherritt, and her son; Tyson Mitchiner.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind at https://www.fsdbk12.org/donate.
