Brent Wayne Sanderlin, 63, of Conroe, Texas, passed from this life on 17 June 2025. He was born on 21 February 1962 to Gerald W Sanderlin and Margie Lee Doyle in
Tomball, Texas.
Brent had a happy childhood running around the countryside of Rosehill with siblings and friends. He graduated from Tomball High School in the Spring of 1980.
He enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin in the Fall of 1980 to earn a Degree in Physics. While in Austin, he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then served a full-time mission to the Santiago Chile South Mission from July 1984 to January 1986. When he returned to Austin, he did a delayed enlistment into the U.S. Navy. Before he left, he met his wife, Mona Leigh Flanders. While he was stationed in Chicago, Illinois, he returned to Texas, where they were married in San Marcos, Texas. He re-enrolled at the University of Texas, but after much thought and deliberation, he changed his major to Education and enrolled at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. His Academic Advisor counseled him to change his major to Pre-Med and attend medical school. In May 1992, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.
While studying for his undergraduate degree, he served in the United States Naval Reserve, achieving the rank of FC2 (Fire Controlman Second Class). He applied and received a United States Navy Scholarship to attend the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1992.
He graduated from medical school on June 1, 1996, and was promoted to Lieutenant, starting his Navy career as a Navy physician.
While in the Navy, he served with the United States Marines as a Flight Surgeon. He learned how to fly helicopters and had a great deal of fun.
After completing his service with the Marines, he finished his medical training with a residency in Family Medicine, accredited by both the AOA and AMA.
His last duty station was at the Joint Reserve Base, Fort Worth, Texas, as the Senior Medical Officer in the Naval Branch Medical Clinic. He resigned his commission as a Lieutenant Commander on June 1, 2005.
His employment after the Navy was varied.
He worked at his alma mater, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, teaching students and serving in the Family Medicine department.
After serving at UNTHSC, Dr. Sanderlin worked as a family physician in Kyle, Texas, for the Seton Family of Doctors and as a faculty member in the Austin Family Medicine residency program. This was followed briefly by serving as the Chief Medical Information Officer for Seton Healthcare of Austin. He later worked as a family physician in San Marcos, Texas, for the Adventist Health System.
While working for Seton, he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Both Seaton and Adventist were wonderful to work with, allowing Brent to continue working with patients.
When his doctor advised him to stop working with patients, he was hired by the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) to teach at their new school.
After a time, he developed a desire to be closer to his family. He took a position as Chair of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine, becoming a Professor of Medicine at the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSUCOM).
During all this, he found the time to start a family with Mona and watched them grow into incredible adults.
Kay and Mark were born while they were in undergraduate school, and Michael was born while he was in medical school. Along with Mona, they followed him all over the southeast coast and Texas, pursuing his dream.
Kay is married to Nicholas Garcia, and they couldn't have picked a better husband for her.
They have two children, James and Rosario Garcia, who are often referred to as the
Hurricane Garcia's children.
Mark works with computers, and Michael will be going back to school to pursue his PhD in Chemistry.
The awards and certificates he has won and been awarded are too numerous to list here, but he has had fun pursuing them.
Those he has left behind and who will miss him dearly are:
Mona Leigh Sanderlin, wife,
Kay Garcia, her husband Nicolas, of Seguin, and their children James and Rosario.
Mark Sanderlin of Conroe.
Michael Sanderlin of Conroe.
Father, Gerald Sanderlin, and his wife, Lynn Sanderlin, of Champion Forrest.
