Dr. Brian D. Houston passed away on November 1, 2024, in Morgantown, WV, at the age of 75. He suffered from heart disease resulting in open heart surgery with unexpected complications. Born on September 4, 1949, in Cincinnati, OH, Brian dedicated his life to the well-being of others, both as a family man and a distinguished rheumatologist.
A deeply kind person, Dr. Houston's career was a testament to his commitment to his patients. He received his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine, followed by his internship at Bowman Gray Hospital in Winston Salem, NC, and then returned to WVU for his residency and fellowship in Rheumatology. Choosing to stay in Morgantown, Dr. Houston practiced as a rheumatologist in private practice for 35 years. Even in retirement, he continued to serve, extending his care at the Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg, WV.
Dr. Houston's life was one marked by the tremendous love he shared with his family and his passion for life's joys. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Houston for 54 years, and the proud father of Todd M. Houston and the late Timothy Delaney Houston. He was also survived by his brother-in-law: Christopher Knapp and Melinda Edmond, were also his personal caregivers. Although preceded in death by his son Timothy, his father Mark Heris Houston, and his mother Mary Clare Spaeth, Brian's legacy of love and kindness will live on through his surviving family members.
Among his many interests, Dr. Houston was an avid sports fan with unwavering support for the WVU football team and was also known for his love of golf. His interests never overshadowed his dedication to his family, whom he cherished above all. The respect and love he received from his wife and children were a mirror of the care and devotion he gave them in abundance.
Friends and colleagues will remember Dr. Houston as a compassionate and skilled physician who never hesitated to go the extra mile for his patients. His gentle demeanor and genuine kindness characterized his interactions and made him a valued member of the community.
