We didn't always say the right words.
I know I had an attitude sometimes.
But I loved you.
You knew that-I know you did.
And I hope you felt it,
Even in the quiet moments.
I'll remember the candy in your pocket,
The sweet tooth you never tried to hide.
I'll remember how your eyes lit up
When you saw my son for the first time-
How proud you were,
Knowing your name would live on.
The way y'all used to play fight,
Like you had your own little language
Made of laughter and joy.
You used to call me Peanut.
And every time we said goodbye,
You'd say "1."
Just like that.
Simple. Certain.
Like you knew I'd always remember.
And I do.
You told me you were proud of me.
I held on to that.
I still do.
This isn't how I imagined our goodbye.
But this is what I'll remember-
The effort you made.
The times you tried.
The pieces of you I'll carry,
Even when it hurts,
Even as I heal.
Rest easy now.
I love you, Dad.
And I always will.
