Brian Robert McDonald 7/11/1952 - 8/29/2025
Brian R. McDonald unexpectedly passed away on August 29, 2025 in Oakland, California at the age of 73. Brian was a lifelong resident of Alameda. He was preceded in death by his parents Judge George E. and Carol A. (Shepard ) McDonald, stepmother Ann McDonald and his sister Janice McDonald and first wife Susan Skrivelis.
He is survived by his wife Keri Spaulding and his sister Marisa McDonald OSF. Other family members include brother-in-law, Steven Spaulding ( wife Mary Ellen and their two sons Cameron and Kyle), and several cousins.
Brian attended St. Phillip Neri School and St. Joseph High School ( now St Joseph Notre Dame ). He later graduated from Santa Clara University and then obtained his law degree from UC Davis.
After law school, he opened a local law practice in Alameda and also worked as an aide for Assemblyman Elihu Harris. He later decided on a career change and became a longshoreman / walking boss where he was a proud Union member of the ILWU # 10 and # 91.
Brian was passionate about social justice, labor relations and politics. In addition, had other varied interests that included rum and tiki life and his love for animals. Those animals included his own current dogs ( Brandy & Poke), cats ( Frank & Kapono and Dusty) bird (Mango) and several foster animals from FAAS ( Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter) and his last foster dog "Capy" from Oakland Animal Services.
He enjoyed visiting Hawaii and visiting many Tiki Bars along the way that inspired him to replicate one in his own backyard - -"The Capy Bar" brought much joy to his friends and neighbors. He also traveled many places with his wife Keri including a safari in Africa.
Brian enjoyed his membership and participation in several organizations including Alameda Architectural and Preservation Society, Aeolian Yacht Club, Island Yacht Club, Native Sons of the Golden West and The Clampers.
Brian was known for his big heart and warm hospitality that touched many. He brought people together with his generous spirit - qualities that made him a cherished friend and neighbor.
The family invites you to attend a celebration of Brian's life on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at an Open House at the Aeolian Yacht Club located at 980 Fernside Boulevard, Alameda from 11:30am to 3:00pm..
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Brian's memory by a donation to FAAS ( Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter ), Island Cat Resources and Adoption or a charity of your choice.
