Southbridge: Attorney Bruce W. Newlands, 77, passed away on Monday, July 1st, in the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 23 years, Judith G. (Greaney) Newlands; his two cousins, Marsha Russell of Jacksonville, FL and Sheila Newlands of Freeland, WA; his two nieces, Alicia M. Atwood of Poughkeepsie NY and Ann M. Atwood of West Newton; his three nephews, Dr. Adam T. Ridley of Westboro, Tyler J. Ridley of Austin, TX and Benjamin D. Ridley of Boston; and many close friends. Bruce was born in Southbridge the son of the late William and Marie E. (Beaulieu) Newlands. He received his bachelors degree from St. Anslem College, Manchester, NH, his Juris Doctor from the George Washington University in Washington DC and his Master of Laws Degree from Boston University.
Bruce was a longtime partner with the Fisher, Mandell and Newlands Law Firm in Worcester, retiring many years ago due to illness. After retiring he served on the Town of Southbridge State Liquor Board and previously was a member of the Town of Southbridge Historical Society. Bruce was an avid snow skier, and especially enjoyed skiing at Loon Mountain in NH. In his younger years he enjoyed playing tennis and was a member of the St. Anslem Tennis Team when he attended there. In his retirement he loved gardening and construction projects on his home. Bruce was proud of his Scottish Heritage and enjoyed attending the New Hampshire Highland Games every year. Bruce was also a lifelong student of American history.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, July, 10th, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 10:00am in Notre Dame Church of the St. John Paul II Parish, 446 Main St., Southbridge. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Southbridge. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Tuesday, July 9th, from 5:00 to 7:00pm.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Anslem College Giesel Library Fund, 100 Saint Anselm Drive, Manchester, NH 03102.
