Byron (Hoss) Quinnan Brooks, a loving husband, devoted father, and proud Texan, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer on October 23, 2025, in North Salt Lake, Utah, at the age of 85. Byron was born on January 27, 1940, in Laketon, Texas, and lived a life defined by family, humor, and kindness. Known for his great sense of humor and his warm disposition, Byron had no enemies; he simply made friends wherever he went.
Byron was a man of adventure and artistry. He loved the adrenaline rush of dune bugging in places like Glamis and Pismo Beach and found equal excitement storm chasing with his sons, embracing life's more thrilling moments. He was also a master craftsman at home in his workshop, where the radio was always tuned to oldies as he worked. He left behind a remarkable legacy of woodworking that friends and family still cherish, including unique walking sticks, custom cornhole games, garbage cans, and classic Adirondack chairs.
His life changed forever on July 24, 1974, when he met the love of his life, Susan, in Long Beach, California, at Uncle Jupe's Sandwich Shop. This meeting was the start of a deep and enduring marriage that became the foundation of his world. A dedicated and supportive family man, Byron took immense pride in his children and grandchildren. His greatest role was always that of husband and father, and he leaves behind a legacy of strength, commitment, and the simple, enduring power of showing up for the people you love.
Byron is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Brooks, and their four sons: Dale Brooks (Michelle Brooks), Sean Brooks (Avette Brooks), Darin Brooks, and Kevin Brooks. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Wesley Brooks, Mason Brooks, Chad Brooks, Travis Brooks, and Breanne Brooks, as well as six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Roosevelt Brooks; his mother, Velma Eunice Stoker; his brothers, James Roy Brooks, Kenneth Brooks, and Jimmy Brooks; and his sisters, Maryann Richardson and Patsy Martin.
A visitation will be held on Sunday evening, November 2, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, located at 55 East 350 North, North Salt Lake, UT 84054.
A viewing will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the funeral service to follow immediately after, at the same chapel location.
Graveside services and interment will be held at the Bountiful City Cemetery, located at 2224 South 200 West, Bountiful, Utah 84010, following the funeral service.
