Byron (Sonny) Luke Williams lifelong resident of Oxford died February 28 at the age of 93. Sonny was born on June 13, 1929, in Oxford, Georgia to Ira and Verna Williams. He was an employee of General Motors for 38 years, retiring in 1990. Prior to joining GM, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He often sold his produce at the Covington Farmers Markets, and more often than not, joyfully gave much of it away. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and an active member of his church, Salem United Methodist. He was kind to everyone, had a loving spirit and was a good Christian man. He will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances, his sons, Rodney Williams, Terry McWaters and Robert McWaters, his sister, Kathryn Bryant, two brothers, Clarence and Garland Williams and his parents, Ira and Verna Williams. Survivors include his wife of 49 years MaryAlice, his son, Tony (Phyllis) of Dallas Texas, his daughter Martha (Sammy) Williams, his daughters-in-law, Patty McWaters, Toni Williams and Lee McWaters Peloci and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Sonny will be held Sunday, March 5, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington with Pastor Carol Standard officiating. An interment will follow in Oxford Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday one hour prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:00.
