Carrie Jayne Speck (nee Martin), of Dumfries, Virginia, died Wednesday, July 16, 2025. She was the wife of Edward Francis Speck, Jr., who predeceased her in 1998.
Jayne was born on July 3, 1943, in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was the only child of the late Thelma Lorraine Webb and John Edgar Martin. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Speck of Arlington, Virginia, and Elizabeth's partner, Jeffrey Morrison.
Jayne grew up in Appomattox, Virginia, and after graduating from Radford University in 1965, moved to Prince William County, Virginia. Later, she earned a master's degree in education from George Mason University. She spent nearly 40 years teaching in Prince William County Public Schools, first at Elizabeth Vaughn Elementary, and then at Springwoods Elementary, where she made many lifelong friends. She was also a member of the Prince William County School Board from 1980 to 1984. Her dedication to education continued after she retired in 2011, when she volunteered with Literacy Volunteers of America.
Outside of work, Jayne loved living in Prince William County and learning about its history. She planned the county's bicentennial celebration in 1976. A devoted member of Dumfries United Methodist Church, she regularly attended services until her death. Refusing to slow down in retirement, she remained busy traveling, reading, and attending plays, particularly at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C. She also enjoyed staying active, walking at least three miles a day, bicycling, and practicing yoga. But above all, Jayne embodied the power of quiet kindness, always remembering to send cards, particularly when friends or family were facing prolonged illnesses.
A funeral service will be held at Dumfries United Methodist Church, and a graveside service will be held at Liberty Baptist Cemetery in Appomattox, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dumfries United Methodist Church or WETA Public Television.
