Calvin Bartholomew Obituary

Calvin Henry Bartholomew Jr.
Calvin Henry Bartholomew Jr. died on May 16, 2025 in the ICU at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, of septic shock. He was 82 years old.
Calvin was born in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, on March 7, 1943 to Calvin Henry Bartholomew Sr. and June Barton. The day he was born, his father was serving in WWII in Africa and the vehicle he was in drove over a landmine. Fortunately his father only suffered hearing loss for a few days. Calvin was the oldest of eight children. Most of his formative years were in Provo, Utah, where he graduated from Provo High.
After a mission to Bavaria, Germany, he met Karen Lee. She had moved into his neighborhood after he left for his mission. Even though he had a 'black book' of girls' names and numbers to pursue, he never used it. He and Karen were married in the Salt Lake Temple nine months later. She earned a PHT (Put Hubby Through) while he received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering at BYU. They had their first daughter by then. He went on to get a PHD In Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. At Stanford they had two more daughters. His first job was at Corning Glassworks in Corning NY, when he received an offer to teach at BYU (his dream job). Before a year was up, he happily accepted. He had a distinguished career teaching and doing research from 1973 to 2008. During his early years of teaching he added two sons to his family. He received several awards including the Carl G. Maeser Research and Creative Arts award, Outstanding Engineering College Faculty Member, and Sponsored Research Achievement Award. He wrote two text books, 20 literature reviews, 125 technical journal papers, more than 250 presentations, and 200 reports. He visited Africa, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and China. Karen was with him for some of the trips. He admitted to being a workaholic and loved his work; he always found it fascinating.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings including: High Council, teacher in Priesthood, Sunday School, Young Men's, and Primary, and choir director. The choir was one of his favorites because he loved music and sang in several community choirs. He also sang solos and duets with Karen on many occasions. He loved to fish, hike, and camp. The High Uintas are his favorite place. We loved him for his busy zest for life; he was also a wonderful, caring grandpa.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles, and his parents. He was survived by his wife Karen, daughter Shirleen Beland (Chris), Kathryn, Janet Brondum (Erik), and David (Julianne). He leaves nine grandchildren: Sarah Hall, William Cooper (Courtney), Leif Brondum, Anders Brondum, Paisley Bartholomew, Ana Bartholomew, Robert Bartholomew, Pria Barholomew, and Janie Bartholomew. He was important to three great grandchildren: Raiden Hall, Emma Hall, and Maisie Hall. He was also survived by siblings: Daniel (Sherlene), Jean Larsen, Joann Tanner (Roy), Robert (Rita), Ralph (Linda), Reid, and Carol Routt (Terry), many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
There will be a viewing at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Orchard 2nd Ward, located at 670 East 800 North, Orem, UT, at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 and a funeral at 1:00 PM on the same day at the same location.
