Calvin Howard Obituary

Calvin O. Howard Sr., affectionately known as "Founder" and "Papi OG," was born on August 29, 1956, in Manhattan, New York, to the late Norman and Ada Howard. As a preteen, Calvin relocated to New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he spent his formative years. He was the youngest of eleven children.
He is preceded in death by beloved siblings: Allen Tanksley Jr., Howard Graham, Otis Tanksley, Diane Tanksley, Miranda James, Ronald Tanksley, Ike Graham, Louise Tillman, and Sharon Howard. He is survived by his brother Karl Tanksley and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.
Calvin attended New Brunswick High School and later answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army in 1973. Following his military service, Calvin pursued his passion for martial arts, founding the E.C.H System of Karate in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1976. His school became a beacon of discipline, strength, and mentorship to many in the community.
In addition to his martial arts legacy, Calvin enjoyed a long and distinguished career in security and bodyguard services, offering protection with honor and professionalism.
In 1982, Calvin met the love of his life, April, in New Brunswick. Their love story blossomed into a beautiful 43 year long union, and together they were blessed with two wonderful children: Satina Deloatch and Calvin Howard Jr. (Dennisha Howard).
Calvin's love extended. He was a proud father to Kizzey Shepherd, Timothy "Karriem" Woodard-Brooks (Lawrence Brooks), and Angela Davis, and a devoted godfather to Tasha Philpot (AK Philpot), and Leilani Miller and his very close friend/karate student Clayton Lewis-all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Calvin also had a deep and abiding love for his grandchildren, cherishing every moment with them. He had an especially soft spot for his two youngest grandchildren, Javier Bacon- Howard and Jordan Howard, who brought him immeasurable joy and laughter.
Among his many beloved nieces and nephews, Calvin shared a uniquely close bond with Carmille Easley, India Deloatch, Kurtis Holden, Richard Tillman, and Karl " Tone Tone" Tanksley Jr. whom he loved and cared for as if they were his own daughters and sons.
He held a special place in his heart for all of his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, always offering encouragement, protection, and unconditional love.
Calvin will be remembered for his strength, wisdom, humor, and unwavering dedication to his family, students, and community. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with love, discipline, and purpose.
He will be deeply missed and forever honored. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Calvin, please visit our floral store.
