Campbell Wade Obituary
Campbell M. "Cam" Wade, age 93, died on May 27, 2024 in Albuquerque. He was born on November 25, 1930 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky to Campbell and Alice Cates Wade, and grew up on a nearby farm.
He earned three degrees in Astronomy from Harvard University. He was the fifth person to earn a doctorate degree in Radio Astronomy and was instrumental in developing the Radio Astronomy program at Harvard. He then served a 2-year post-doctoral appointment in Australia and 34 years on the staff of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. He played a major role in the design, location, construction, and organization of the Very Large Array (VLA), a significant astronomical research facility west of Magdalena, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Stewart C. Wade and Richard S. Wade, and by his first two wives, MaryJane Stewart and Mary Ann Foster Mihalic, and his brother, Robert Cates Wade and wife, Ella Mae Chapman Wade. He is survived by his children Karen E. and David C. Wade; by his stepchildren Linda C., Stephen A., and Jason F. Mihalic, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Kathrine Wade Williams and her husband, David Pellegrom and by his third wife, Marcia E. Congdon.
A memorial service will be held at La Vida Llena. Date and time to be determined.

Cam Wade will be missed. He was always fun to be around. I interacted with him a number of times but especially during the searches for sites for the VLBA antennas and the EVLA Phase 2 antennas. The latter, unfortunately, were not funded. I have attached a photo of Cam and Frazer Owen taken near Silver City during one of the EVLA2 site search trips.
I regret that I will not be able to make the service as I will be traveling on a long planned trip.

We had the good fortune to spend some time with Cam and Marcia. Cam was such a kind and gentle man with good stories to tell. He was a gifted scientist who contributed much to the radio astronomy field. He will be sorely missed.
