Candace Joy Head, 73 of Woodbury, GA passed away Monday, July 28, 2025, at Upson Regional Medical Center in Thomaston, GA.
Ms. Head was born August 6, 1951, in Newnan, GA, the daughter of James Drewry Head, Jr. and Margaret Lorriane Lanier Head. She was a graduate of Flint River Academy in Woodbury Class of 1969 and class valedictorian. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Mercer University, graduating summa cum laude in 1973. Candace was a member of Woodbury First Baptist Church. After working as a teacher, librarian, and travel agent, Candace retired from the State of Georgia after 12 years of service.
Candace many accomplishments included being a founding member of the women's basketball team at Mercer University. She taught reading in several states across the United States, including Texas, Virginia, Florida and New Hampshire. She was a travel Agent who loved planning travel for others and traveling herself. Her favorite city in the world was London, England. She served as librarian at the Coleman Library in LaGrange, Georgia. She loved this work as it fit with her strong love of books and reading of the classics. Candace was active with the Lafayette Society for Performing Arts of La Grange, Georgia, where she conducted classes in storytelling and participated in storytelling events. She told stories about the Fox Theatre in the Georgia Public Television documentary, The Fabulous Fox.
Candace was a dedicated church member. Ms. Head was an active member of Woodbury First Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary and was active in the Ministries of Faith class and served as Sunday School Teacher. She served as a volunteer for the Woodbury City Cemetery Committee assisting in placing flags for Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Independence Day. Ms. Head used her skills to serve as narrator for Christmas and Special Programs at Woodbury First Baptist.
Candace volunteer service over the years included, International Association of Workforce Professionals, Volunteer Recording Studio Narrator, Literary Alliance, Partners in Education and Meriwether County Heritage Book Committee. Ms. Head carried a strong love of animals, supporting animal rescue, spay neuter and release efforts, and helping others with their pets.
She was preceded in death by her parents, maternal grandmother Margaret Gill and paternal grandmother Lora Head. She is survived by her sister, Chrissy Head Hendricks and her brother-in-law Jim Hendricks of Woodbury, GA, niece Hannah Lanier Hendricks of Marietta, GA, cousins Jack D. Tinley and Mary Jane Stewart, special friends Dr. Angelyn Hayes, Drs. Will and Rhonda Rogers, Cathy Harbin and Vicki Matthews and her beloved cats.
Funeral services for Ms. Head will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Woodbury Baptist Church, Woodbury, GA with interment following in the Woodbury Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at Cox Funeral Home,
Manchester, GA.
