Carl Edward Downs, Jr., 86, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2024, at Wellbrooke of Avon. He was born in Indianapolis on October 29, 1937, to the late Carl and Edna (Moody) Downs, Sr. Carl graduated from Ben Davis High School and joined the United States Air Force shortly after in 1955 and served until 1963. He married Fletitia “Tish” (Dobbins) Downs on December 13, 1967, and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2023. Carl worked for Olin Brass for several years before retiring.
Carl and Tish were longtime members of the Plainfield Eagles Lodge #3207. Together they enjoyed camping, boating, and skiing at their property on Heritage Lake. They also enjoyed traveling with Tish’s brother, Bob, and his wife, Sue. For many years, Carl and Tish took part in bowling leagues and worked in the voting polls. Carl was an avid coin collector and liked to garden in the summers. He will be missed dearly by his family.
In addition to his parents, Carl is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Fletitia Downs; son, Terry Turley; brother, Leonard Smith; sister, Juanita Smith; and infant grandson, Brian Keith Summitt.
Survivors include his son, Carl (Ann) Downs of Indianapolis; daughters, Victoria Turley-Carter of Mooresville, and Teresa Turley-Mundy, of Bloomington; sister, Wanda Inabnit; grandchildren, Stephanie (Danny) Brock, Ashley (James) Callahan, Zachary Gallagher, Ezra Turley-Robinson; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson.
Carl’s Life Celebration® Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024, 11:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. A Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 P.M. with military honors. A private burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery.
