"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
Carl Loyd (Coach) Grubb, 89, of Moorhead went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 21, 2023. Carl was born October 23, 1934, in Pittsboro, MS, to Ralph and Pearl Morris Grubb. He graduated from Friars Point High, where he excelled in all sports. He was recruited by Coach Jim Randall to become a Trojan at Sunflower Junior College, which is now Mississippi Delta Community College. He played football and ran track. Upon graduation at SJC, he was recruited to be a Statesman football player at Delta State Teachers College (DSU). There, he was named Little All American in football. He earned a B.S. in biology at DSTC, M.Ed. Science at Mississippi State University, and additional graduate hours at Auburn University. There was a hierarchy in his college loyalty: MDCC Trojans first, DSU Statesmen second.
Upon graduating from DSTC, he volunteered to serve in the Army where he served active duty for 2 years, 2 years active reserve, and 2 years inactive reserve. After receiving an honorable discharged from the Army, he was employed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Being an avid fisherman all his life, this was his dream job. However when a different governor was elected, he lost his job. Carl had commercially fished off and on for years, so his firing gave him an opportunity to commercially fish for a while. However, God had another profession in mind for him. Coach Jim Randall contacted Carl the spring of 1961 to ask if he wanted to coach and teach at Moorhead High School for 2 years then coach and teach at MDJC. He, Randall, and Coach Jimmy Bellipanni coached all the sports until 1978 at MDJC. From 1978-1997 Grubb continued to teach science classes at MDCC. He taught at Moorhead High School/ MDCC for 35 years. Through the years, as he was admitted to hospitals in Memphis, Jackson, or Indianola, it gave him great pride to interact with one of his former A&P students and receive excellent care. He also enjoyed interacting with or hearing about his athletes from Moorhead High School or MDCC.
During his retirement years, he continued to support MDCC and attend events on campus. He and his wife, Brenda, endowed the Carl and Brenda Grubb Scholarship. One of his greatest honors was the naming of the MDCC Girls Softball Field the "Carl and Brenda Grubb Field". He was named the 2007 Alumnus of the Year at MDCC. In 1994, he received the Mississippi Legislature H.E.A.D.W.A.E. Outstanding Faculty Honoree of MDCC.
As a testimony of his athletic ability, he has been inducted into four Sports Halls of Fame: Mississippi Delta Community College, Delta State University, Clarksdale-Coahoma County, and the State Community/Junior Colleges Sports Hall of Fame as player and coach.
As alluded to, Carl was an avid fisherman. Until his health declined, his favorite places were on the Mississippi River and his lake house (which he built) on Beulah Lake. He introduced the Mississippi River to many of his fishing buddies but always cautioned them to respect the river over safety concerns. He taught his children and nephews the same. He enjoyed crappie fishing and made his own fishing lures (jigs). He also enjoyed camping. He introduced his children to camping at an early age. He and Brenda van camped as much as possible to visit almost every state in the U.S., but they never found an area they would rather live than the Mississippi Delta.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Pearl Grubb; brother, Morris Grubb; sister- n- law Vivian Grubb; and special friend Joe Kynion. He leaves behind Brenda, wife of 61 years; daughter Carondelet Nollner (Mike); son Karl Grubb(Robin); sister Mildred Garnett; niece Kate Garnett; grand children Braxton Tanner, Kyle Grubb (Laura), Karlyn Goff (Trey), Anne Marie Nollner, Christian Range (Mike), John Nollner (Kelcie); Pat and O. L. Garmon ( sister- in- law and brother- in- law); as well as multiple generations of nieces and nephews. In the Bible as well in the musical production Lion King, the emphasis is on "The Circle of Life". Carl embraced his first great granddaughter, Lucy Brett Grubb, daughter of Laura and Kyle Grubb, on October 1, 2023. God sent one angel from Heaven and claimed another angel, Carl Grubb, to be in Heaven eternally.
In addition to his family, friends, MDCC, and DSU, Carl had a deep love for the Moorhead United Methodist Church, his country, his community, and the outdoors. Carl never could have attended college without his athletic scholarships and stipends for his graduate classes at Auburn and degree at MSU.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 26, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm, at Moorhead Methodist Church. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. Veronica Pritchard officiating. Burial will follow in Moorhead Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to The Carl and Brenda Grubb Scholarship, MDCC, PO Box 770, Moorhead, 38761. Other options are The Moorhead Methodist Church, PO Box 690, Moorhead, 38761; Delta Grace Mission Hub, PO Box 218, Sunflower, MS 38778.
