Carl Henry Kjellberg, 84, passed away peacefully at home on September 19th, 2024, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 7, 1940, in Hartford, CT, Carl was the son of Swedish and Norwegian immigrants, Axel and Signy Kjellberg.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Barbara; sons Eric (Lupe) of Huntsville, AL, and Steven (Julie) of Raleigh, NC; daughter Christine (Rick Matthews) of Apex, NC; three grandchildren: Axel Hardee Kjellberg (Rachel), Tess Hardee Kjellberg, and Helena Matthews; and his brother Ernest of MA. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Axel Jr.
Carl was deeply devoted to his faith, having grown up in the Swedish Salvation Army and later joining Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong member of his church choir and the Swedish men's choral group, the Wenneberg. An avid musician, Carl played the trumpet and participated in his school band for four years.
A hard worker from a young age, Carl delivered newspapers at 10, saved for his first bike, and worked at a local delicatessen during his teenage years. After brief stints in manufacturing and at Pratt & Whitney, he served three years in the U.S. Army as an Air Traffic Controller at Fort Bragg, NC. Following his service, Carl spent 33 years working at Southern New England Telephone (SNET) in the Cable Test department, where he enjoyed working outdoors.
Carl had a passion for baking, which he inherited from his father, a professional baker. His Swedish breads and pastries were beloved by family and friends. He also cherished his Scandinavian roots, visiting family in Sweden and Norway many times throughout his life.
An avid hiker, Carl climbed the Presidential Range in Vermont and New Hampshire and covered many miles of the Appalachian Trail, a dream he held dearly. He was a devoted father, encouraging his children to share in his passions-hiking, carpentry, and baking. Carl will forever be cherished for his kindness, gentle spirit and strong work ethic. He was a friend to all and always ready to lend a helping hand.
His family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Hospice team and his team of caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Raleigh, NC, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life service will be held in approximately five weeks.

A special moment shared with Carl was when he surprised me with a dance at Eric´s and mine wedding. He had been working with PT to fulfill his promises to have a first dance with me after he got out from the rehab facility. Priceless! That moment when Frank Sinatra´s " The way you look tonight " played brought me to tears.

I feel blessed to have known Mr. Kjellberg (and Mrs. Kjellberg) for nearly 30 years. Carl always welcomed me with a smile when I came by to see Eric. His kindness lives on in his children Eric, Stephen, and Christine who I know he cherished and loved very much.

Singing together at Summer Sing, Zephyr Point, NV in July of 2011 along with Cliff Wilcoxen and me - plus a group from Good Shepherd. After Summer Sing event the 4 of us drove to Yosemite National Park for a true adventure - as well as lots of other adventures on our way back to Reno to fly back to Raleigh. Great travel companions. Lots of fun, lots of laughs, treasured moments in all of our lives. Thanks for the memories,
