Carl Douglas Marcus was born August 31, 1927, to Peter and Lena (Kohrs) Marcus in Prinsburg. He was baptized and made profession of his faith at First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. Carl enlisted in the US Navy at age 17. After a year of service, he returned to finish his education, graduating from Clara City High School where he met his future bride of 71 years, Shirley Duininck. Carl continued his education at the Minnesota School of Business. On December 23, 1952, Carl was united in marriage to Shirley Duininck at the First Christian Reformed Church. They were blessed with four children: Jane, Bruce, Valerie, and Ross.
Carl began his career working for several local construction companies. In 1956, Carl founded Marcus Construction, building pole barns, wastewater treatment plants, guardrails, signage, and design/build pre-engineered steel buildings. By the time he retired in 1995, the company grew to be a respected general contractor in Minnesota.
Carl took two consecutive mission trips to Ecuador as part of a construction crew, building a hydraulic dam to service a Christian radio station. Carl was an active member of his community as part of the city council, the CMCS School Board, the fire department, and as a charter member of Unity Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg.
Carl enjoyed woodworking, boating, fishing, model trains, traveling, and a fast Cadillac. Carl and Shirley enjoyed wintering on Anna Maria Island, Florida. Most importantly, he loved his grandchildren, taking great pride in each one, always supporting them in their activities. His quiet faith was evident throughout his life, leaving a legacy for his family.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; children: Jane (David) Bland, Bruce (Gayle) Marcus, Valerie (Tom) Kuik, Ross (Dawn) Marcus; grandchildren: Elizabeth (Zaheer) Lari, Michael (Rachel) Bland, Abigail (Joshua) Gulbranson, Alexander (Erin) Marcus, Leslie (Brett) Nelson, Connor (Lindsay) Kuik, Claire (Spencer) Macomber, Maxwell (Mary) Kuik, Taylor (Lindsay) Marcus, Paige Marcus, Marina Marcus, Casey (Darin) Bushard; 25 great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Robert Moore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Dale (Audrey) Marcus, Shirley (Curt) Jensen and Rachel Moore.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bethesda and Rice Hospice for their heartfelt care. If desired, memorials may be made to Central Minnesota Christian School.
