"Chief" Carl J. Munch Sr., a lifelong resident of
New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the age of 97.
While growing up in New Orleans, Carl was an avid duck and rabbit hunter and learned the carpentry trade from his father. As a teenager, he proudly served in the US Navy and deployed to Okinawa during World War II. After the war, he worked as a carpenter and builder, while teaching his sons the trade, until he retired. A true craftsman, his meticulous work can be found in many homes throughout the city. Carl was a member of the Dixie Pigeon Club, where he enjoyed racing homing pigeons. He could also be found at his camp on Lake Catherine, spending time with his family and working on his latest project. In recent years, Carl found joy in caring for his dog, chickens, and pigeons, and watching The Incredible Dr. Pol. "Chief" was a lifelong lover of animals!
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joan Segrave Munch, and sons Eric V. Munch and Christopher J. Munch.
Carl was also preceded in death by his parents, John A. Munch (Sarah) and Hilda C. McCormick (Broward), and his siblings, Clyde A. Munch, Elaine Roberts, Ernie Tassin, Joy M. Koen, and Linda Page.
Carl is survived by his children, Carl J. Munch Jr. (Jessie), Joan "Kathy" Nuccio (Dominick), and Greg L. Munch (Tammy Nick); his grandchildren, Gene L. LeBouef Jr., Gina M. Finch (Tony), Kristy Evans (Bobby), Jeffrey D. Nuccio, Breann Ivers, Kimberlee Munch, and Brianna Nick; as well as his great-grandchildren, Peyton Finch, Connor Evans, Parker Finch, Jordan Evans, Vance Finch, and Max Finch. Carl also leaves behind his brother, Orrin "Buddy" Munch, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dorothy and Nurse Tiffany for their years of loving care and compassion to Mr. Munch and his late dog, Sweetie Girl.
