Carl Eugene "Corky" Nelson

Carl Eugene " Corky" Nelson Jr., 64, of Newport passed from this life on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. He was born February 20, 1959, to Carl Eugene Nelson Sr. and Shirley Jean (Williams) Nelson.
Corky was a member of First Baptist Church in Newport. He graduated from Newport High School in 1977. After graduating, he started his career in the grocery store industry. He went to work at Ed's Fairway initially. He then worked for Safeway and Cecil's and eventually retired from Kroger when the store's Newport location closed. He temporarily worked for Illinois Central Railroad before going to Kroger. He was a kind and caring man who was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a great artist, an avid reader and quite the handyman to have around the house. He loved music and singing and was known for his green thumb when it came to gardening and working in his flowers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Winnie Nelson and his uncle, Charles Nelson.
He is survived by his Sister, Shirl Nelson of Newport; his aunts, Clara Nelson of Newport, and Donna Leo of Florida; and a very special cousin, Dorothy Smith.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are the Class of 1977 and his fellow Kroger employees.
Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday September 8, 2023 at Walnut Grove Cemetery with Pastor Greg Dills officiating.
