Carol Ann Fitzmaurice, nee Slattery, passed peacefully on August 11,2025, following 91 years of a life in full. Growing up humbly during the Great Depression in rural South Dakota made her resilient, optimistic and grateful.

Carol was adventurous and quick to make friends, many lifelong. She came to the Twin Cities soon after graduating high school and wholeheartedly embraced new places, people and ideas. She earned her nursing degree and dedicated nearly 50 years to the profession, mostly in psychiatry, which suited her compassionate temperament. Carol loved to travel and did so far and wide across the far reaches of the US, Europe and Latin America, often gallivanting off fearlessly on her own.

Carol married Owen Michael Fitzmaurice in 1957, and they had three sons. She is survived by her sons Joseph and Walter; grandchildren Megan, James and Owen; current and former daughters-in-law Dede and Cathy; sister Phyllis; brothers Terry and Bill, and a delightful dozen or so of grand nieces and nephews whom she adored. Loved ones whose passing preceded Carol's include her beloved son Larry; former husband Owen; mother and father Ruth and Patrick; devoted step-father Herbert; and brother Tom, recently.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 15 at 10:30 AM at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, 330 Idaho St., Salem, SD.
