Carol Ann Self, Ph.D., of Mandeville, LA, formerly of Tuscaloosa, AL, died after a brief illness on August 12, 2025, at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was 80.
Preceded in death by her parents, David and Helen Huckabee Self, Carol is survived by her children, Nicole Self-Drake Hughes (David), of Tuscaloosa, David Self (Erin Barreto), of Mandeville and Jesse Self of Oklahoma City, OK; her grandchildren Jack Diaz-Drake, of Savannah, GA, Lucy Diaz-Drake, Nick Diaz-Drake, Jack Hughes, Whit Hughes, and Win Hughes, of Tuscaloosa, Sage Parker of Bella Vista, AR, Andrew Self and Xachary Bourgeois, of Mandeville, and Mary Elizabeth Thigpen (John), of Memphis, TN; great-grandchild Weslee Parker, of Bella Vista, AR; siblings Jane Self, of Athens, GA, Frances Self Drennen, of Tuscaloosa and Jim Self, of Ithaca, NY; many nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends.
At the University of Alabama, where she was a cheerleader and Miss Alabama leading the Million Dollar Band, Carol received both a bachelor's and a master's degree before earning her Ph.D. in Psychology. After moving to Louisiana in the late 1980s, she established Timberlake Psychology Group in Mandeville. She often expressed gratitude for her long-time office manager and friend, Dianne Kernan. Committed to the therapeutic process, Carol loved seeing her clients benefit from the work they did and the progress they made.
Carol was well-known in Old Mandeville for her luxuriant flower and vegetable garden on Girod Street. She loved designing and tending the garden and was happy that the community enjoyed it year-round. She also delighted in her collection of night-blooming cereus plants, diligently filming their incredible late-night openings and then sharing the videos with her friends.
Always curious about the human condition, Carol never stopped learning. She loved meeting new people and maintained life-long relationships from everywhere she lived. Carol will be missed by all those who were fortunate enough to cross her path in life. May she rest in peace.
The family would like to thank all those who cared for Carol in her final weeks, especially the staffs of St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Hospice of West Alabama, for their compassionate treatment.
A memorial service will be held for Carol at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church, 605 Lurleen B. Wallace Blvd. N., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northshore Humane Society, at https://www.northshorehumane.org/, the Samaritan Center, at https://samcen.org/, or the charity of one's choice.
