Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary & Monuments - RussellCarol Rose Shaffer, 93, of Waldo, Kansas, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio.
Carol was born on May 21, 1932, in Rural Russell County, Kansas, the daughter of Earl O. and Alice F. (Fluetsch) Zweifel. She grew up in Waldo and graduated from Waldo High School. She was united in marriage to Charles Henry Shaffer on April 02, 1950, in Waldo, Kansas. From this union Carol and Charles were blessed with 5 children Teresa, Vernon, Brent, Lori and Bruce. She worked as a mother and farm wife helping her husband take care of the daily farm chores. She also worked for many years as the Postmaster of the Waldo Post Office and worked as a certified med aide. She was a longtime member of the Amherst Methodist Church. She enjoyed nature, bird watching, crafts, entering items in the Russell County Fair and was a faithful servant of the Lord. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and being involved with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.
Surviving family includes her daughter Teresa Shaffer of Russell, Kansas, son Brent L. Shaffer and wife Kathy of McCook, Nebraska, daughter Lori Custer and husband Lane of Hoxie, Kansas and son Bruce Shaffer and wife Angie of Waldo, Kansas; brother Keith Zweifel and wife Loretta of Waldo, Kansas; sisters Marilyn Ewing of Enid, Oklahoma, Sharon Mixer and husband Terry of Mesa, Arizona and Glenda Anspaugh and husband Victor of Salina, Kansas; 11 Grandchildren, many Great Grandchildren and two Great-Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; sister in-law Meg Zweifel of Great Bend, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles on February 12, 1999, and son Vernon Shaffer; brothers Norman and Wayne Zweifel.
Cremation has been selected by the family and a memorial service to celebrate Carol’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the Luray Methodist Church in Luray, Kansas. A reception will be held at the Waldo Senior Center in Waldo, Kansas, immediately following the memorial service. A private family burial of the cremains will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials may be given to the Amherst Church or Waldo Senior Center and sent to the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
