Carol A. Sutherland, 87, of Honeysuckle Drive, passed away at NHC, Mauldin on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. She was born in Rolla, Missouri on September 13, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Rufus C. and Lorene D. Sutherland. Surviving are her brother, Henry D. (Pat) Sutherland, nephew, David J. Sutherland, niece, Lynn (Scott) Gurkin, great nephew, Chase Gurkin and great niece, Peyton Gurkin. She loved her family and enjoyed the special times she had with them.
After graduating from Furman University, she taught art at Hughes Middle School and transitioned to being a full time "Potter" and owner of Heathmere Pottery. She was a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and participated in their two fairs in Asheville, N.C. for many years. Her family and friends loved receiving her beautiful pottery as gifts and now they are treasures.
She was a long-time faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church in Berea where she served in many capacities.
She enjoyed making baskets, weaving fabrics and helping decorate the church for special occasions. Her favorite season was Spring which allowed her to plant her flowers and vegetables. In her own words, she loved digging in the dirt. She loved the outdoors from sitting on her deck watching the birds to spending time at her summer home in Brevard hiking in the woods.
Services will be on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest on White Horse Rd. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. with the Memorial Service in the chapel at 12:00 p.m. The committal will be at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Belton, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 403 Sulphur Springs Rd., Greenville, S.C. 29617
