Carole M. Holmes

Carole (Mumley) McGovern Holmes, formerly of 4 Whittlesey St, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025 at the Alice Center in Malone. Born on October 28, 1941, she was the daughter of Earl and Vivian (Ryder) Mumley. She was a graduate of the Franklin Academy class of 1959. She was married to Gail McGovern in 1961, and later married Frederick Holmes in 1997.
In her early years, Carole worked at the New York Telephone Co. Later she stayed at home to raise her sons, then was employed as secretary to the director of North Country Community College, Malone branch. After relocating to Georgia, she worked at Georgia Southern University. In retirement, her love of traveling brought her and Fred on a cherished trip to Ireland, and several cross-country trips. Together they built a house in Statesboro, GA, then also lived in Chandler and Sedona, AZ, before moving back to Malone in 2000. They wintered in Ellenton and Bradenton, FL. Carole was the buyer for the Alice Hyde Hospital Gift Shop for many years and was a Member Emeritus of the AHMC Auxiliary Board. She also volunteered at St. Andre's Parish Thrift Shop. She enjoyed visiting with friends and especially spending time with her family.
Carole loved her family dearly and will be missed by her three sons and a daughter in law, Shawn (Pauline) McGovern, Scott and Ryan McGovern, all of Malone. Also surviving her is a sister, Gail Scott; four grandchildren Kaeley (Nate) Bachand, Keagan (Caroline) McGovern, Bethany McGovern, Blaine (Alissa) McGovern; as well as seven great-grandchildren: Stella, Hattie, & Olive Bachand, Bennett McGovern, Weston, Kaisleigh and Teagan McGovern; and a step son-in-law David (Kris) Holmes of Washington, as well as many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Gail 'Mac' McGovern; Frederick Holmes; and a brother in law, Larry Scott.
Calling hours will be held September 9th from 12 - 2:00pm, followed by a service at 2:00 at the Frary Funeral Home, Malone. She will be buried next to her husband Fred at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga Springs on September 11th.
