Carrie Elizabeth (Basil) Heckert of Bethany passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Hospice Home in Oklahoma City. She was born April 30, 1942, in Annapolis, Maryland, to parents Owen and Betty Basil. She was the second of six children.
After graduating from high school, Carrie worked as a secretary at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. It was there she met her husband George Heckert, a Marine. After marrying, they moved to Washington state where George pursued his career in aviation and Carrie continued to work as a secretary for various businesses and at Ft. Lewis Army base. They lived in Washington, Alabama, South Dakota and Oklahoma, but always in her heart, Maryland was her home.
In addition to her secretarial work, Carrie also had stints as a preschool aid, worked at Hobby Lobby, and sold antiques in her own booth. Carrie had a passion for Early American antiques and a good eye for quality. She especially loved baskets and quilts, and was a regular for years at weekend estate sales.
Carrie was proud of her home in Bethany which she made a place of beauty with her finds and care. She loved warm weather and sunshine, so Oklahoma was a happy place for her.
Carrie had a strong faith in Jesus and was a regular attendee of Parkside Assembly and Christ's Legacy Church over for over 20 years where she and George made many connections and friends.
Her last 10 years were a challenge as she dealt with the long goodbye of Alzheimer's disease, but she remained happy and cheerful being cared for in her home, and then making new friends in memory care at Southern Plaza in Bethany. She will be missed.
She leaves behind her husband of 62 years, George Heckert; daughter, Ashlie Wallo; son, Eric Heckert; son-in-law, Bill Wallo; daughter-in-law, Sandina Heckert; grandchildren, William (spouse Laura), Emma, Lauren, and Brooke Wallo; and a great-granddaughter, Josie. She is also survived by brothers, Owen and Charlie Basil; and sister, Susan Morgan in Maryland; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Judy Basil-Burns and Patti Scott.
A small funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 10:00AM at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service in Bethany, Oklahoma. A celebration of Carrie's life will be held at a later date.
