Catherine "Cathy" Kotzur, age 71 of Floresville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Cathy was born on December 22, 1952, in Floresville, Texas to Robert Stevens and Melba Burkett Stevens.
Cathy loved God, loved her family, loved life, loved to laugh and loved helping others. She was the most selfless person you could ever meet, consistently putting the needs of others above her own.
Cathy graduated from Floresville High School in 1971. After that she attended Texas A&I in Kingsville, Tx, where she would later meet the love of her life, Jerry Kotzur. Cathy married Jerry Kotzur on May 8, 1976, and was later blessed to become a mom to James Kotzur on August 10, 1978. Cathy loved her job as the scale operator/grain tester for Lyssy and Eckel Feeds in Poth for over 17 years, before back surgery forced her to retire. Retirement allowed her the time to make precious memories with her three grandchildren; Mason, Wesley and Clara Kotzur. She loved watching her grandkids play sports and participate in Stock Show events. She loved taking golf cart rides with Wesley, crafting with Clara and she was incredibly proud that Mason attended and graduated from Texas A&M University. Her grandchildren were the light and loves of her life.
Cathy enjoyed life on the farm, from the cattle to bass fishing in the tank. She wasn't fond of the rattlesnakes though. Cathy loved deer hunting and was blessed to hunt the Thompson Ranch in Atascosa County for many years. Cathy was a hard hunter and would hunt all day long. Her blind was always full of Dr. Pepper cans and candy wrappers. On several occasions we would all be at camp cooking and eating lunch, when we'd hear a shot coming from her direction. This was before cell phones, so Jerry would drive to her blind, and sure enough, she'd have a buck lying there. She was proud to demonstrate her corn trick she used to get the deer to come back to the feeder, even after all of the corn was gone. She would put some corn into one of her empty Dr. Pepper cans, then shake the can, and she claimed the deer would immediately come running back. Not sure why the deer kept falling for her trick, but apparently, they did.
Cathy was a good fisherman too. Her favorite bass lures were either a rattletrap or a jitterbug. Every time she'd catch a fish, she'd bust out laughing. She would get a kick out of the grandkids catching fish, too. She'd insist they bring it over and hold it up, so she could take a picture. Cathy also loved taking pictures, so Jerry always tried to get her the latest phone with the best camera. Her friends can confirm this too. Cathy was the undisputed selfie queen. Not that she was vain or anything, but every time she'd get her hair fixed, she'd start snapping selfies, and not just one or two, dozens. Clara seems to have inherited that trait as well.
Cathy enjoyed spending time with her longtime friends/classmates. From weekly breakfast tacos gatherings to planning crazy trips together, these ladies were always looking for a good time or adventure. Cathy looked forward to seeing these ladies often.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Melba Stevens; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Cathy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jerry Kotzur; son, James (Elisabeth) Kotzur; grandchildren, Mason Kotzur, Wesley Kotzur and Clara Kotzur; brother-in-law, Kenneth Kotzur; brothers, Don (Alice) Stevens, and Jeff Stevens; along with numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel, in Floresville. Funeral services will be held the following day Wednesday, August 7, 2024, beginning at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Floresville, Texas. Interment will follow the services at Floresville City Cemetery.
