Catherine Elizabeth Maples, affectionately known as Cathie to her friends and family, was a beacon of light in the lives of those she touched. Born on September 20, 1956, in Oak Hill, West Virginia, she carried the spirit of her Appalachian roots throughout her life, a foundation of strength and warmth that defined her character. On August 21, 2025, Cathie departed this world in Billings, Missouri, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and boundless courage.
Cathie's life was a testament to the power of nurturing and devotion. As a graduate of Clever Missouri High School, she carried the torch of lifelong learning and instilled this value in her family. Her path was marked by the heartfelt roles she embraced with enthusiasm: a homemaker, a dedicated farm wife, and a short-order cook who served up not just meals but joy and comfort to all who sat at her counter.
With her beloved husband, Gary Maples, by her side, Cathie's journey was one of partnership and mutual support. Together, they raised a family that expanded in love and numbers, including their daughter Chelsa Jenkins, son-in-law Russell Jenkins, and daughter Sarah Doyle with her husband Larry Doyle. Cathie's grandchildren-Shelby Jenkins, Kayla and Maclain Rapp, Carlea and Braden Ray, Kelsy and Jake Tennis-were the apple of her eye, and her great-grandchildren-Preslie, Claire, and baby boy Rap-were cherished additions to her heart. Cathie's family circle widened with bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought further joy and fulfillment to her life.
Cathie's love for her 'babies,' Fast Eddie and Honey Bun, the best dogs ever, was renowned. They were not just pets but integral members of her family, sharing in her everyday moments and adventures. Her passion for life was evident in her love for scary movies, fishing, camping, and anything that could be enjoyed under the open sky. She was a culinary artist, cooking not just to feed but to express her love, and her generosity knew no bounds as she consistently reached out to help the needy and support her family.
As one who was creative, courageous, and generous, Cathie's life was a canvas of compassion and resilience. Her enthusiasm for spoiling her grandchildren was matched by her commitment to being a 'Nana to all,' a role she cherished and fulfilled with every fiber of her being. She was the embodiment of the words of Maya Angelou, who once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Cathie made everyone feel loved, valued, and truly special.
Today, we celebrate Cathie Maples, a woman whose spirit could light up the darkest room, whose courage inspired others to be brave, and whose generosity flowed as freely as the rivers of her beloved West Virginia.
