Catherine "Kitty" O'Connor, a beacon of joy and warmth, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on October 9, 1942, in Gort, County Galway, Ireland, Kitty was the cherished daughter of the late James and Kathleen (nee Woods) Cummins. Her life was a testament to love, laughter, and the enduring strength of family.
Kitty's journey led her from Ireland to New York, where she married John O'Connor at St. Philip Neri Church in 1965 and raised their family in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. Although she faced the heartbreak of losing her son Kevin in 1972 and her beloved husband John in 1999, Kitty's resilient spirit and boundless love never wavered.
She is lovingly remembered by her devoted children: John O'Connor (Eleanor), Catherine Muldoon (Michael), Neil O'Connor (Debra), Julie O'Connor, and Emmett O'Connor (Jennifer). Kitty's role as a grandmother was one of her greatest joys, and she will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Kristin, Ryan, Andrew, Jack, Emma, Michael, Aidan, and Seamus. She is also survived by her siblings Josephine (Dodo) Gormally and John Cummins (Mary), and she now joins her siblings Mary, Christopher, Michael, and Patrick Cummins, Ann Smith, and Bridget Purfield in eternal rest. Kitty was also a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Kitty's life was marked by her remarkable sense of humor and quick wit, which endeared her to all who knew her. She was a woman of great kindness, never judgmental, always seeing the glass as half full. Her positive outlook on life was contagious, and she had the rare ability to lift the spirits of those around her with just a few words or a gentle smile.
Above all, Kitty was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She took immense pride in each of their achievements and was a constant source of support and encouragement. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and the importance of family-a legacy that will continue to live on through the lives of those she touched.
All are welcome to attend a visitation on Friday, January 24th from 4-8 PM at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 25th at 10AM at St. John The Evangelist Church, also in Mahopac. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
