Charles Batherson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Groce Funeral Home & Cremation Services- Lake Julian on Jan. 15, 2026.
** UPDATED SCHEDULE ** Due to the threat of winter weather in the area, Mr. Batherson's funeral will now be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, January 23 at All Saints Anglican Church.

Flat Rock resident Charles "Chuck" Batherson, age 70, died at home on January 12, 2026, with his wife Anne Bell Batherson at his side.

Chuck was born May 9, 1955 in Oakland County, Michigan to Charles and Barbara Batherson, graduated from Garden City West High School, and Troy State University, and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.

In 1979, Chuck married Anne Bell of Greensboro, NC. After moving to Dothan, Alabama, from their home in Garden City Michigan, Chuck and Anne raised a family while Chuck worked as a nuclear power plant operator at Farley Nuclear Plant.

After retiring to North Carolina in 2007, Chuck and Anne lived in Greensboro until 2020, when they moved to their beloved western North Carolina mountains. Chuck was a avid model railroad builder and hobbyist, an accomplished baker, and an outstanding family genealogist. Chuck and Anne were world travelers in retirement, enjoying trips to Alaska, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and most recently, a cruise down the Mississippi River.

Chuck is survived by his wife Anne; mother, Barbara Batherson; daughters Tori Granberry (Blake) of Dothan, AL, Susie Sowell (Chad Scribner) of Pooler, GA, and; son Jay Batherson of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren Tyler, Bailey and Noah, and great-granddaughter Bella. He is also survived by sisters Patricia McKelvy, Amy Frazee (Jeff), Susan Pichla (Walt), and brother Scott Batherson (Mari Galvez), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles R. Batherson.

Services will be held on Friday, January 23, at 4:00 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River, NC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, Chuck's family requests that donations be made to All Saints Anglican Church (15 McDowell Road, Mills River, NC 28759), or the charity of your choice.
