Charles S. Carver
September 17, 1943 - April 5, 2025
Poughquag, NY - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles S. Carver. He died peacefully at home in Poughquag, NY on Saturday, April 5, 2025. He was 81 years old.
Son of Charles Colby Carver and Juana Isabel (Lopez) Quiñones, Charles was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico on September 17, 1943. He was lovingly raised by his mother and stepfather, Jose Quiñones, and enjoyed being big brother to his siblings Raquel (Quiñones) DaCosta, Maria Isabel (Quiñones) Vergez, Francisco Quiñones, Rafael Quiñones, and Emily (Cotto) Guerrero.
Charles and his family moved from Puerto Rico to Manhattan when he was 11 years old. He graduated from Aviation High School in 1962 and went on to proudly serve his country in the US Navy from 1962 to 1966. He often spoke about one particularly intense naval mission that involved flying over the Bay of Pigs to take reconnaissance photographs during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, and Honorable Discharge pin for his service.
After being honorably discharged, Charles become a licensed aircraft mechanic. He worked for Pan Am Airlines at JFK airport in Queens, New York for 25 years until the company ceased operations in 1991.
Being too young to retire when Pan Am shut down, he went back to school and trained to be a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration technician. This led to a new career in the hospitality industry. He was hired at some of the finest hotels in Manhattan, including the Four Seasons New York and Hôtel Plaza Athénée, and eventually worked his way up to become chief engineer at the Intercontinental Hotel. He retired in 2008.
Charles met the love of his life, Gloria (Sanchez) Carver, at a church function in 1968. They married at Central Baptist Church in Manhattan on September 14, 1969, and remained inseparable throughout their 55-year marriage until she passed away in November 2024. They happily welcomed their daughter Esther (Napolitano) in 1970.
Charles was devoted to his wife and daughter and loved them dearly. He worked hard to support his family and gave them the best of everything.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed traveling with Gloria and Esther to Florida and Puerto Rico, golfing, collecting coins, cheering on his favorite teams (the Mets and Jets), and savoring a delicious meal with the people he loved. He got the most joy, however, from being there for his family. He made his parents proud, his siblings looked up to him, his extended family could always count on him, his wife felt truly loved and supported, and his daughter adored him for being a constant source of advice, motivation, and support.
In recent years, Charles was especially proud of his role as grandfather (also known as "Wito") to his only grandchild, Matthew. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with him and treating him like the son he never had.
Charles leaves a beautiful legacy of unwavering faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His love of Christ and His teachings was evident in every part of his life, and he never passed on an opportunity to share that with others. He will be fondly remembered for his generosity, never hesitating to give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. He was a blessing to everyone who knew him.
Predeceased by his wife, Gloria, and his parents, Charles is survived by his daughter, Esther, his son-in-law, Douglas Napolitano, and his grandson Matthew, his siblings and their spouses, and an extended family that includes aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews who all loved him very much. He will be greatly missed.
