Charles Chandlee Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jun. 10, 2025.
Charles Lawrence "Larry" Chandlee, age 81, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully at his home on June 4, 2025 from a battle with cancer.
Born in Wilmington, Larry was the son of the late Margaret Jane (McDermott) and Charles Aloysius Chandlee of Wilmington, DE. He graduated from Salesianum high school in Wilmington, followed by the University of Delaware with his degree in civil engineering. Prior to his academic pursuits at U of D Larry served in the Delaware National Guard from 1966-1968. After college Larry spent several years working at Dupont Chambers Works in Deep Water, New Jersey before beginning his career at the former Fireman's Fund. Larry spearheaded risk assessment and loss control while at the Fireman's Fund (now Allianz Insurance), often performing inspections within the Greater Philadelphia Area. Following his retirement from Fireman's Fund, he began his own business as a loss control specialist, primarily working for First Delaware Insurance and Peninsula Insurance supporting their clients in Kent County, and Sussex County Delaware and surrounding counties in Maryland.
In addition to his work, Larry loved tailgating and attending University of Delaware Football games with his family, and was a season ticket holder for nearly two decades. He enjoyed occasional visits to Delaware Park like his father before him and was a big fan of finer beers, Maryland crabs, and seafood. He would regularly visit Chesapeake City, Maryland with his wife Eileen and enjoyed time with his whole family there for his recent 80th birthday celebration. In retirement he dedicated much of his time on his house through various carpentry and landscaping projects including his gazebo, tree benches, pergola and his grand kid's favorite "mulch bridge" Late in life his primary joy was time with his grandchildren, enjoying the title of "World's Greatest Pop Pop" from a coffee mug he was given by his son and daughter in law as he learned of the pending birth of his grand daughter.
Larry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie "Eileen" Chandlee; his children, David Chandlee and his wife, Marie Anne McIntyre of Garnet Valley, PA, and Jane Marie Chandlee of Media, PA; his grandchildren, Rebecca Marie Chandlee and Alex Harry Chandlee; his siblings, Peggy Akin, Helen Dione, Robert Chandlee, Cathy Felmey, Evelyn Heal, and Diane Stoddard along with dozens of nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Charles Chandlee; and his siblings, Mary and Danny Chandlee.
Memorial services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
