Charles Garrett Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 19, 2024.
Charles Edward Garrett, affectionately known as handsome Chuck, was a man of God, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and the fifth born child of John and Dora Yokley Garrett of Nashville TN.
Chuck was educated in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System where he graduated at the top of his 1958 Class at Cameron Senior High School. Charles continued his education at Tennessee State University, where he majored in Industrial Arts and later completed the required studies to receive a master's degree in School Administration and Supervision. During his tenure at TSU, Charles became a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Chuck worked in management at Nashville Glass Plant, where he gave many people an opportunity to secure financial stability. He was later offered a managerial position at Ford Motor Company in Detroit, MI. He remained there for five years before returning to Nashville to teach in the MNPS Public School System. After teaching for several years Charles was promoted to an assistant principal's position at Maplewood High School. Next, he was promoted to Apollo Middle School as the principal. While at Apollo Middle he was honored for having the highest district test scores for 6 consecutive years.
He was proud of the many skills he was blessed to do and enjoyed teaching those skills to others. Even after his retirement as a school principal, he continued to teach others the mechanics of various construction and remodeling techniques.
Prior to relocating to Atlanta and attending Renaissance Church of Christ, Charles served the congregation at Schrader Lane. There he was a Bible School teacher, worked on the Building & Grounds Committee, served on the sick visitation team and worked with the Summer Enrichment Education Development Program. He was also responsible to drafting, developing, and installing all the signage for the new David Jones Senior Citizen Center at Schrader Acres.
Later, Charles moved his membership to Jackson Street Church of Christ where he was faithful to the work that he was called to do. This work included teaching Bible class, serving on the SK London Scholarship committee, assisting in developing and monitoring the weekly after school tutoring sessions and co-chairing the 2014 Church directory. Additionally, while at Jackson Street Church, Bro. Garrett was commissioned to design and install a memorial display case in honor of the Late Great. Marshall Keeble. This work of art remains on display in the fellowship hall today.
Chuck leaves to cherish his memories, his lovingly devoted wife Brenda. He also leaves to cherish his memory, children, Andrea McCaskey (Jamal) of Irondale Alabama, Charles Edward Garrett Jr. (Andrea) of Nashville TN., Yulonda Opare-Addo Crump and Eugenia Harding Moore of Nashville and Erik Harding of Atlanta GA. Additionally, he leaves behind six grandchildren: Desiree Walker, Brandon McCaskey, Madison McCaskey, Kaiya Garrett, Laila Moore and Lennox Moore. Additionally, he leaves behind his brother Jimmy Garrett, God son-Andrew Christian and best friend, Sepia Wright and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and those he's touched.
