Charles C. Gravenor, loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, brother and dedicated community servant, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the age of 70. Born on June 28, 1955, in Salisbury, MD, Charlie grew up in a family that valued hard work and faith, a son of the late Calvin L. Gravenor and Dorothy Yvonne (Perdue) Gravenor. He was a proud member of the Wicomico High School class of '73, where he showcased his musical talent by playing the trumpet in the marching band. Following high school, Charlie attended United Wesleyan College in Allentown, PA for one year. In 1975, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving until 1979, followed by two years in the Air Force Ready Reserves. He was particularly proud of his involvement in the Baby Lift program at the end of the Vietnam conflict, which highlighted his deep compassion and commitment to helping others. Charlie earned an associate's degree in criminal justice from Wor-Wic Community College as well as several credits from UMES utilizing his veteran's benefits. Charlie began his career in law enforcement with the Fruitland Police Department and later the Delmar Police Department, before dedicating nearly 20 years of his life as a correctional officer at the Poplar Hill Correctional Facility, concluding his career at ECI in 2002. Throughout his professional journey, he was known for his unmatched discipline, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to every task he undertook. Beyond his career, Charlie was a man of faith, actively participating in Community Bible Study and wearing his convictions proudly. Never afraid to show his faith, he carried his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ every day. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees, and he delighted in playing adult league co-ed softball with his wife. He participated in local Fantasy Football and Baseball leagues with his son. He was also a dedicated member of WeightWatchers group in Salisbury MD. Charlie leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Connie Lewis Gravenor, to whom he married August 31, 1975; his cherished son, Chad Gravenor; and his adored grandson, Landyn Michael Gravenor. He is also survived by his siblings: his brothers, Wayne Gravenor and wife, Patricia and Joseph "Joe" Gravenor and his wife, Ollie; his sister, Betty Scarborough; many nieces and nephews; his faithful dog, "Freddie;" and his favorite grand-dog, "Hammer." In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Vernon Gravenor, Walter Layfield, Jr. and Richard Layfield; and a sister, Doris Wilkins. A funeral service with military honors to honor and celebrate Charlie's remarkable life will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation will be held from 10:30 am to 12:00. Interment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Charlie's memory may consider making a donation to the Denton Camp, 424 E. Wesley Circle, Denton, MD 21629, reflecting his deep commitment to helping others learn about Jesus. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
