Charles "Buddy" Edward Hargrove, 74, of Cornelius, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness. April 23rd was also the date of his marriage to Janet Taylor Hargrove in 2004, who predeceased him. It must have been a wonderful anniversary reunion.
In addition to his wife, Janet, he was predeceased by his mother, Ruby Hargrove Moore, step-father, Clarence "Woody" Woodford, and brother-in-law, Thomas Welsh.
Buddy was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on September 12, 1950. He grew up there where he excelled in sports. As the quarterback for the Eau Claire High School Shamrocks, he led his football team to a state championship; Buddy also pitched for the baseball team. A football scholarship took him to Newberry College. He also attended the University of South Carolina.
After meeting Janet, they settled in Charlotte and then lived many years in Cornelius, NC. Buddy's work life was varied. After working as a manager of environmental waste remediation, he drove both taxis and tow trucks. He especially enjoyed his work in security at The Pines retirement home where he valued the relationships he formed with the residents.
He is survived by his siblings Kathie (Bill) Hinson, Patsy (Jerry) Lynn, Judy Welsh, and Fred (Helen) Moore. Dear friends, nieces, nephews and in-laws, Sandy (Joe) and Lori Taylor, will also cherish his memory.
Buddy will be remembered for loving devotion to his wife, loyalty to friends, ready wit, enthusiasm for all sports, big smile, kind heart, and love of a good tomato.
As a tribute to his beloved dogs, Cocoa, Heinz, and Sadie, donations may be made to the Cornelius Animal Shelter, 19110 Meridian Street, Cornelius, NC 28078 in Buddy's honor.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.

Buddy, as your housemate at the "Doo Drop Inn" at USC and then in Boone on Payne Branch Road, no one had a larger time than us! We laughed, played and had so many epic moments and you were always at the center of it all. Though we haven´t been close for years I will always cherish those memories of one of my favorite people and best friends. RIP

Buddy was a true friend to my wife and me for over 50 years. We have many great memories both in Charlotte and Boone. Lots of laughs and good times. He will be missed.

Always looked up to Buddy. I remember him from Eau Claire Baptist Church sitting in the balcony with Reverend Borom at the podium. Sorry for your loss.

I will miss my good friend and "running buddy"
You were always quick with a smile and a joke and were such a good natured, empathetic, life loving person!
We shared a love of sports and "having a good time" !
You lived life to the fullest and left it on your on terms !
I will always remember our good times together and although you´re leaving us way too soon, your memories will fondly remain!

Buddy,
My earliest memory of you was when you were teaching me to throw a football when I was about twelve years old
You showed me how to put my fingers on the laces, bring the ball above my shoulders and chunk it
You were so kind to spend time with me and younger kids
You led Shamrock football back in their glory days and that was fun to watch
You were a good brother too and you left us too soon, but God has other plans for you
We love you and will miss you, and will join you soon
Freddie
