The world was saddened by the passing of a remarkable man on January 12th, 2025, Charles Joseph (Charlie) Hoye, age 101. Charlie was born on June 14th, 1923, to Joseph Henry Hoye and Annie E. Heilly in Taunton Massachusetts. He attended school until graduation in 1941. World War II was raging at the time so Charlie joined the Army in early 1942. He was assigned to the 444th Engineers and attained the rank of Tech Seargant. They landed on Omaha Beach June 7th, 1944, to build Bailey Bridges which helped move heavy armored equipment. Charlie was assigned to many different jobs during the war, one of which was a cook. This became a dark period for the sential soul, an Italian prisoner was assigned to him to keep in the Galley. At some point this man decided to try to escape by jumping Charlie for his sidearm. A fight ensued and Charlie fought for his life.

After the war Charlie returned to Massachusetts and married his high school sweetheart, Loretta Ida Ducharme, and together they started their family. They had five children, Marceline, Denis, Charlie (Terry), Loretta Barbara, and Joseph who passed away at birth.

Charlie started his newspaper career back in high school by writing, printing, and publishing the Bay Stater in the attic of his home. In 1946, he joined the staff of the Taunton Daily Gazette. After a few years he decided to branch out and accepted a new position as editor of the newspaper, The Levittown News in Levittown, Pennsylvania. He later worked at two papers in New Jersey. In 1960 Charlie returned to Massachusetts to be closer to his elderly parents and took a position at the North Adams Transcript.

Charlie and Loretta founded a business called the Charlor Mineral House, specializing in hand made jewelry made by Loretta, on the Mohawk Trail.

In 1978 the cold in New England became too much for them, so they ventured to the Southwest. They landed in Truth-Or-Consequences, New Mexico. However, the weekly paper Charlie joined did not suit him so a move to Hobbs, New Mexico came about. He joined the staff of the Hobbs News Sun where he remained until he retired in 1990. Unfortunately, while he planned to spend his remaining years with Loretta she passed away in 1991. He then led a quiet life until he passed away on January 12th, 2025.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Loretta, his parents Joseph and Annie Hoye, brother Paul, sister Margery, son Joseph, Daughter Marceline and daughter Loretta.

He is survived by son Denis, son and caretaker Terry, son-in-law Jim, grandsons Jamie, Eric, Noel and Ray of Arizona, son-in-law Harry, granddaughter Charlore, grandsons Peter, Jeffery, and Robert of Seattle, Washington, grandson Bradley and granddaughter Christine of Texas, granddaughters Amanda and Laura, daughter-in-law Bernadette of California, along with four great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons and two great-great grandchildren.

There will be no service for Charlie, in lieu of flowers, just thank the Lord for putting this gentle man on earth.
