Charles Jones Obituary

Charles Ray Jones, Jr., age 68, of Bakersville, went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 21st, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion to his family. He was born in Mitchell County to Betty G. Jones of Estatoe and the late Charles Ray Jones, Sr., who passed away in 2010. He was also preceded in death by his best friend and canine companion, Rusty.

Affectionately known as "Junior" by his mother and siblings, Charles lived a life filled with kindness, dedication, and joy. He graduated from Harris High School in 1975, where he excelled in both wrestling and football. As a senior, he was selected to play in the East/West All-Star game in Greensboro. He later attended Mars Hill College, where he continued to play football and carry on his passion for the sport.

After college, Charles began working at Coats American, formerly known as American Thread, where he worked for 44+ years, until his retirement in December 2022. Charles always gave back to his community as a little league baseball and football coach for many years, encouraging and mentoring countless young athletes. A true sports enthusiast, he was a lifelong Tar Heel basketball, Atlanta Braves, NHRA drag racing and NASCAR fan. Additionally, he also enjoyed golfing and men's league softball.

He also enjoyed camping, working on model cars, gardening, mowing, and was happiest when spending time with family and grilling at family gatherings. His family cherished his warm smile and his big heart, especially his wife. He loved attending every event involving his grandchildren-from concerts to ball games-always showing up with pride and unwavering support. His favorite title in life was "Pawpaw".

Charles grew up attending Liberty Hill Baptist Church, later serving as a deacon at Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church before returning to his home church later in life. His strong faith and dedication to his loved ones defined who he was and how he lived.

In addition to his mother, Betty, he is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Carroll Jones; his mother-in-law, Brenda Carroll of Upper Browns Creek; his children: Sarah Morrissey (James) of Morganton, Bradley Jones (Bridgette) of Erwin, TN, Andrew Wantz (Megan) of Burnsville, and Cassie Burleson (Shaun Dicks) of Morganton; and his grandchildren: Caleb Morrissey, Emma Morrissey, Carter Hoyle, Grayson Jones, Corbin Jones, Devin Wantz, and Lucas Wantz. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Queen (Donald) of Bakersville; his brother, Keith Jones (Sheila) of Piney Hill; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family who loved him dearly.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26th, at Yancey Funeral Services. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A private family graveside service will be held in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Charles will be remembered as a man of faith, love, and generosity-always there for his family, friends, and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
