Charles Douglas Mays, Sr, age 73, of Dunwoody, GA, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2025. He was born July 16, 1951 at St. Joseph's infirmary in downtown Atlanta, to Robert L. Mays and Louise Gibbs Mays, of Stockbridge, GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Leonard Mays, Nancy Smith, and Johnny Mays.
Charles will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Beth, along with children (and their spouses) Douglas Mays (Samantha) of Canton, GA; Cheri Callaway (John) of Alpharetta, GA, and Barbara Burns (Tim) of Flower Mound, TX; Brothers: Jimmy (Elaine) Mays of Gainesville, GA; and Richard Mays of McDonough, GA. He proudly doted upon his grandchildren Carol and Rob Burns, Avery and Hannah Callaway; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1969 as the class president. He completed his undergrad at Georgia Tech with a BS in behavioral management in 1973; MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1976; then Juris Doctorate in 1979 from Salmon P. Chase Law School College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
While Charles worked on his MBA & Juris Doctorate, he was Personnel Manager for Indiana & Michigan Electric Company in Aurora, Indiana; owner and operator of Worldwide Health Services in Cincinnati before joining the law firm of Rendigs, Fry, Kiely & Dennis. Family and friends were important to Charles; thus he joined the firm of Hendricks, Spanos & Phillips in Atlanta in 1985; worked several years with Clifford Steele before sole practice where he represented J. G. Wentworth in Georgia until retiring in 2020.
He served on the board for Point Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department in Erlanger, KY from 1981-1985. He also proudly served as the President of the Woodworkers' Guild of Georgia from 2008 - 2011. He held numerous other volunteer positions, serving as mentors to those in need, and helped in various capacities, as he saw a need. He boastfully manned the grill at his children's swim meets at Huntley Hills and Vermack Swim Clubs.
A celebration of life service will be Saturday, July 12th at 11am; Kingswood Church in Dunwoody, GA followed by lunch in the gym. (4896 North Peachtree Rd., Dunwoody, Ga)
For those that cannot attend, services will be livestreamed at https://kingswood.church/live.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to www.PulmonaryFibrosisFoundation.org or www.thecleanwater.org. Charles battled Pulmonary Fibrosis for the last 6 years of his life; he contributed and supported the Clean Water Foundation because his friend, Cliff Steele, is the founder.
