Charles Willard Moore was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 25, 1930, to the late Carl B. Moore and Mildred Schmedel Moore.
He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School as a member of the Tech Legion, an academic honor society. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War period, rising through the ranks from private to Captain. Bachelors and Masters degrees were received from Butler University and the doctorate from Indiana University. Advanced study was gained at London University during a year of research and writing which culminated in a series of articles and publication of "Ivor Gurney: Poet and Musician". He was a founding member of the international Ivor Gurney Society as well as "Fondateur", Le Amis de Francis Poulenc. A performer in opera and recital he was a member of Singers and Actors Equity.
In 1965 he came to East Carolina University where he served as chairman of the Vocal Music Department until his retirement in 1992. He held professional offices in state and national organizations, receiving the "Orpheus Award" from Phi Mu Alpha "Sinfonia" for significant and lasting contributions to the cause of music in America". He received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Pitt/Greenville Arts Council in 1982 and 1983. In 1984 he was recognized by the Pitt County Involvement Council. He was one of the founders of the Pitt/Greenville Arts Council, Greenville Choral Society, Eastern Carolina Orchestra and Chamber Music Association, Greenville Boys Choir (first director). In addition, he has served on the Greenville Drug and Crime Committee. For twenty-seven years, he served on the Board of Directors of Operation Sunshine, serving as both president and treasurer. In retirement he has served as a volunteer reader and board member for Radio Reading Service of Eastern N.C. He was an active member of the Golden K Kiwanis, delivering Meals on Wheels.
Charles' wife of 63 years, Jo Ann Strebe Moore, preceded him in death in the year 2020.
He is survived by daughters, Carol Moore-Monroe and her husband, Douglas of Greenville; and Amy M. Keusink and husband, Chris of Gold Beach, Oregon. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Family was the joy of his life.
