Charles S. Paynter, Jr., age 100, passed away on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016 at Hammond House in Nampa. He was born November 6, 1916 (Election Day) at Caldwell's first hospital, located on lower Cleveland Boulevard. His parents were Charles S. Paynter, Sr. and Harriet (Mott) Paynter, early pioneers of Caldwell. The family lived at Barber, near Boise, while his father was employed in the construction of Arrowrock Dam. They returned to Caldwell in 1918, living on his grandfather, Isaac Newton Paynter's homestead on Paynter Avenue. In 1928, when Charles was 12 years old, the family moved to the family farm north of Caldwell. He attended Caldwell schools, graduating from Caldwell High School in 1935. After two years at Link's Business School he moved to Sun Valley where he was manager of the Skeet Field.
In April, 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. As a member of the 237th Ordnance Battalion he was sent to Honolulu and later to Baker Island. In December, 1945, he was discharged and he returned to the farm. He met Norma Thompson at a meeting of the Caldwell Rod & Gun Club, became her instructor and they were married five months later. To this union three sons were born, Neil, Brent and Philip. The boys shared their Dad's love of the outdoors and chose to spend their days hunting in the mountains or fishing the lakes and reservoirs of Idaho.
In later years Charles pursued his taxidermy hobby during the winter months at first and it soon became 'almost' a full time job. He was a perfectionist and tutored many young men in the art of taxidermy. Charles was a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the Idaho Taxidermist Association, the Mule Deer and Wild Sheep Foundations, a third generation, 72 year member of Mt. Moriah Lodge #39 A.F. & A.M. in Caldwell, the Scottish Rite Bodies and Caldwell Presbyterian Church, (EPC), Caldwell.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Louise Paynter and a great grand-daughter, Jacquelina Paynter.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Norma; his sons Neil (Chris), Brent (Diane) and
Philip, grandsons Dr. Mitchell (Dr. Julie), Brett (Dustie), Jake (Dawn), Mick (Sue) and Mark; his granddaughters Tenley (Matt) Schwab, Censia (Cory) Felts, Lindsay (Jacob) Paul, and a beloved former daughter-in-law Victorina and many beloved great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 8th in the Caldwell Presbyterian Church, EPC at the Caldwell Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2106 E. Linden St., Caldwell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Boise, Shriner's Children's Hospital, 1275 E Fairfax Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84103 or to a charity of your choice.
